The museum is housed in the old parliament building which was founded in 1835 by Queen Amalia and previously housed the Greek Parliament from 1875 to 1935. The old parliament is an architectural jewel in the centre of Athens. While its grand congress hall is a place of historic significance, it also is appropriate for hosting major cultural and historical events today.
A great segment of the collection, gathered since the founding of the Society, is part of the permanent exhibition of the Museum, presented in the rooms encircling the congress hall. The museum is dedicated to the Greek War of Independence since the fall of Constantinople to the Turks up to and including the Greco-Italian War in 1940. The National Historical Museum is also a research centre for modern Greek history.

The museum includes collections of insects, mammals, birds, shells, rocks, minerals and fossils, from the natural wildlife of Greece. The botanical collection includes more than 200.000 species of plants, among which there are 145 newly-discovered ones, which have been recorded thanks to the museum's research.
It was founded in 1882 and is located near Syntagma (Stadiou street). The museum includes representative collections of the greek history, after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Outside it, Theodoros Kolokotronis, the leader of Greeks during the war for independence -which started in 1821- shows the way to... freedom.
This museum deals with the Ottoman years and the struggle for independence. It's located in a historic old parliament building.
The national history museum in Athens contains some of the world's greatest pieces of Greek art. Be sure to see the bronze statue of Posideon. Admission was only 3 euro.
