Home to the Acropolis, Athens will cover the needs of those who are into ancient history (Ancient and Roman Agora, Athens, Kerameikos, Athens, Temple of Olympian Zeus) but also lots of other roman and byzantine monuments, lots of small of big orthodox churches and numerous museums, National Archeological Museum, Athens and Acropolis Museum, Athens are a must see although there are many more (Lycabettus Hill, Athens, Changing of the Guard, Athens, Plaka, Athens, National Garden etc).
Greater Athens area has about 4,000,000 inhabitants, seems chaotic with numerous 5 or 6 story concrete buildings and heavy traffic but there are so many nice corners you will be surprised. No need for public transport as most of the attractions are in the compact city center, you can easily walk and reach most attractions.
