Restaurants to avoid, Athens
The Berlin Music Bar on Syngrou Boulevard is a hangout for scam artists. A well-dressed old guy (Yanni he called himself) intercepts you and starts talking, then accompanies you to this bar. You buy each other a drink and then a third person, younger and attractive ("Marina"), asks you to buy her a drink. Depending on how many drinks she knocks back, you're stuck with a bill and intimidated if you don't pay it. The drinks turn out to be MASSIVELY overpriced. I didn't get stuck for much, but avoid this place or this situation.
As I am Greek and I live in Athens I have to tell you some tips for good restaurants and which of those you have to avoid.
As all European cities you have to avoid tourist’s restaurants. If you are in Plaka or Monastiraki there is a 90 % possibility to eat bad food.. In those aereas you don’t see any Greek to eat.. There are only 2 or 3 good restaurants near Plaka or MOnastiraki (they are not traditional but good). You have to ask a local (not someone working in this area beacuse maybe he provide you his cousin/sister/father restaurant) for a good rastuarant. If you need to eat some traditional and good food it is better to walk about 20 minutes (Exarcheia, Kolonaki, Hilton area etc). There are really good restaurants where Greeks eat! It is a criterion to find a good place. Go there where Greeks eat!
There are some touristy restaurants in the centre of Athens that you cannot miss.
After lunch or dinner they bring you a small piece of cake with a candle and sing "Happy birthday". Of course this is supposed to be for fun, but surely it is done to attract people.
Many tourists find it amusing, others not.
If you come to a restaurant and you find the quality of food is not good, you should immediadely ask for another dish and ask to be taken back.
I have seen several times serving burnt burgers or steak and the people just accept it.
It is better to talk than remain naive. The owner will boast that they fooled you.
Me and my friend were about to get ripped off here in athens in this restaurant known as Old Plaka Restaurant. Basically when we asked a taxi driver he brought us here and without offering us the menu cards he wanted us to order the fish. I just asked for the prices and he said 70 Euros and 80 Euros for one fish !!! Oh Gosh !!! thank God we didn't order.
Actually, they have got TWO SEPRATE Menu cards, and one of them is for tourists and the other one is for locals. so, I would simply recommend you to stay away from this place !!!
