Know about this?
Man, it's hot!
I think that 2007 probably was the worst summer for Greece. Extreme heat and forest fires plague the country while I was there (I'm not jinxed, ok). When walking in Athens, there were many times I thought I couldn't take the low humidity & 45°C (over 120°F) temperatures.
So, always be ready for the heat when in summer by wearing comfortable clothes, hat, sunglasses and drink lots of water. I think went through 3 liters of water a day, and avoided too much sun when I could.

As anyone who comes to Athens, I had as one of my first things to see is the Acrpolis. I had even put aside a whole just to see it. But as I had started to climb the long steps to the top, the heat and all the sun took its toll on me...and I started to get heatstroke.
Be smart and go in the afternoon or when its alittle cloudy. Save yourself ....I'm telling you...no matter who fit you are or how much H2o you drink...the heat is just too much!

DO NOT go to Athens in...
DO NOT go to Athens in July-August. The best time is September and the first week of October, or April - May.
It's very hot there and because of the topographic structure not much of a wind to clean the air. If you are sensitive to air pollution and high humidity - don't go there in the summer time. Otherwise Athens is a very beautiful place to visit.
Warning to all fair-skinned people...
The summer sun in Athens is intense. I burned just walking around the Acropolis. A good SPF 30 is required for those wishing to remain a human color and not that of a lobster.
Plus, the air is DRY. Drink plenty of water there because you will dehydrate quickly.

Sometimes, the mercury can soar to more than 40o C (104o F) in the shade... The best solution should be the stay inside a room with air condition and many bottles of water, at least... Such days, as you see, the temperature can be very hot, in general...

What is the best time to visit...
What is the best time to visit Athens? It's certainly not the summer - it's extremely hot (40C degrees). In July and August it's better to go to the islands. And in spring or autumn (September is the best) you could make a tour of the Greek capital.
Athenian smothering summers
If you visit Athens in summer expect to be exposed in very high temperatures.Athens used to have one the best climates in the world as it was dry and pleasant. The temperatures weren’t so high. The endless concrete, lack of much green and the fires that burned much of the forests in the neighboring mountains of Athens, are the factors that made Athenian summers tending to be unbearable.Yet,there isn’t so much smog as in former decades and the phenomenon of ‘nefos’(a blanket of smog) is not visible since most athenian cars now use unleaded fuels, many industries have moved far from Athens and strong mesures(in traffic) are imposed when the atmospheric pollution reaches high levels. I would recommend you to visit the Acropolis in the morning. You’ll avoid the crowds and the heat, that is searing on the barren rock.Yet,if you choose to go another time have a bottle of water, sunglasses, hat and a sun lotion! And prefer t-shirts with light colors! Also prefer a lodging with air-contitioning! Now,once you visit Athens in winter you’ll surprised to see that it’s mostly sunny!Often the temperature climbs to 20 C but an umbrella is always necessary.Equally often it can be really cold in Athens as well, with very strong winds,so you should bring the appropriate cloting.Snow is very rare in Athens. It snows once in a decade. The last time it snowed, was in January 5th 2002 and the city was paralyzed! The best time to visit Athens is spring, ofcourse. The temparure and weather is perfect(if it rains it’s just for a while),the flowers at the archaeological sites have blossomed and still there aren’t too many tourists. The picture depicts the Zappion mansion a beautiful public building named after the great donnator. The picture was taken in January 5th,and it is a...historic document!
