No cars. No buzzy mopeds. Not even a bicycle. We did see the garbarge truck, though. Instead, you can hire a donkey or pony at the port to take your luggage to the hotel, or your groceries to your villa. Most stuff is lugged around in hand carts by skinny young men.
Picture is typical Hydriot public transport.

    From Pireus

by eladr Written Jun 9, 2003

You can reach the island from Pireus by ferry\dolphin.
Take the metro until pireus station (green line) and then cross the street and go left
until you will see tickets offices.

Dolphin is much faster (around 1.5 hours) and more expensive (16 euro - one way).

All timetable and other details can be seen in dolphins greece web site
    (http://www.dolphins.gr)

Water taxi jets through a Hydra sunset

Boat taxis humm in and out of the Hydriot harbor. They bustle up and down the coast taking people to this beach or that.

    Upward and Onward on Hydra

Walking is the best way to get around the island and the town. Certainly the cheapest. Just remember, part of the journey always seems to go up!

    Trucks of Hydra

There are no cars on Hydra. Here donkeys do what they have for eons ... they act as beasts of burden. They are the trucks of the island.
