Paleochora is the first capital of Kythira. Its name was Agios Dimitrios. It is located in the north-east side of the island
It was built in the top of the hill of an amazing gorge. If you shut lowdly your echo can be heard 5-6 times.
It was built in this place for protection, just not to be seen from the sea (pirates fear).
Unfortunatelly pirate Barbarosa found the village and completely destroyed in 1537.
It is full of fine Byzantine churches and chapels.
The beach you see is the same as in my "Kithira island" page but the photo is from another place.
In the top of the hill that surrounds Kapsali there is a very small churg "Agioi Akindinoi" and you can see it from few places in Kapsali.
It isn't so easy to guide you the way you can reach this place. From Livadi village (direction to Chora) you drive to "Strapodi" village (exiting Livadi in the left and just accross the "souvlaki" shop) there is an asceding street where you can also see a very nice restored windmill. You pass through Strapodi and keeping straight (there are some houses in this area, so you can ask info) From Livadi village you can ask someone local to show you the way.
Take into consideration that the road isn't so good, so you better drive a jeep.
But the view is worth...!!!!
