Attica in Moscow

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts has one of the most representative collections in Russia of foreign art dated from ancient times to modern days. You may see a wonderful Black-Figured Amphora "Heracles and Cerberus" from Attica dated 530 BC. The amphora depicts the twelfth labour of Heracles. At the order of tsar Erispheus Heracles had to descend into the underground kingdom and bring a monster that was guarding the gate — three headed dog Cerberus, to show it to the tsar and return it unharmed to the kingdom of Shadows. On the vase god Hermes, protector of wanderers is conducting Heracles to the underground kingdom. Heracles himself in a lion's hide lures Cerberus. In front of him he sees Persefona the queen of the underworld kingdom. The vase came from Attica, from the workshop of Andocides, a famous master from Attica and was attributed to Master of Licipid, the leading master of...

Irini - Peace

by janetanne

This lovely statue is standing on the small hill before the main square in Vouliagmeni. Passed often by travellers rushing to the beaches in summer, but seen clearly on the Greek National Holiday celebrating their Independence, March 25th, when wreaths of flowers are laid at her feet. Life is full of small miracles. Should we be blessed with Peace, a greater miracle could not exist!

Let's go Surfing Now

by janetanne

When the Southern wind blows, the waves rise up in Vouliagmeni Bay! What a glorious sight from afar! In the summer, this beach is one of the best in Attiki. In the winter, as when this picture was taken, it is great for a brisk walk along the beach, and when the water is calm...some brave soles even venture into the water..burrrrr!

The Real Forbidden Fruit

by janetanne

The pomegranate is said to be the 'real' fruit that Eve tempted Adam with. If the garden of Eden was located where it is thought to have been, then it would have been impossible for an apple tree to have grown there at that time...therefore, it would have most likely to have been this much symbolically painted passionate fruit...the Pomegranate. These can be found along many paths as these were found in a garden above the beach at Agia Marina one day in October when the sea was too wild for swimming! If you are in the mood for an extraordinary taste sensation, try mixing the seed of the pomegranate with fresh 'Rocket' or 'Roka' as it is called in Greece, balsamic vinegar and sprinkled with fresh grated Parmesan Cheese for an unexpected burst of refreshing flavour! Enjoy!

Swim at Agia Marina Beach

by janetanne

Take a walk down the stairs to this excellent beach. It is located just past the beautiful white church of Agia Marina on the beach road. You will see a small island that is approachable by wading out though the shallow water at a certain point in the sea. The rest of the area has deep water which is excellent for swimming and snorkeling. You may swim here year round if your are brave enough...like the dolphins! Take a picnic lunch and stay the entire day. I doubt that you will want to leave early!
