    Sunsets at Sounio

    by Kodi01 Updated Jan 29, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: I love this picture with the island to the side.

Fondest memory: Getting to the top of the mountain where the temple sits and finding out that my friend had been taking pictures all day long, only to find out that he did not have film in his camera. He just about jumped off this cliff into the ocean.

    What is he thinking?

    Another... monument?

Favorite thing: Andreas sits at his favorite place in Sounio, waiting until the sun goes deeply down in the sea... Maybe he is thinking about Aigeas, the king of Athens, who was waiting Thiseas, his son, to come back from Crete alive.
Thiseas had been there to kill the Minotaur, as he finally did, and had promised to his father that his fleet would have white -and not black- sails, during his return. Unfortunately, Thiseas forgot to change the sails, Aigeas saw the black ones and he fall from this rock, as he was thinking that his lovable son was dead...
The Aegean Sea, which you see, took his name...

    The sanctuary of Poseidon

by AndyRG Updated Dec 24, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Poseidon is the god of the sea and this temple is dedicated to him. It was built in 444 BC. There are saved 15 (of the 34) columnes, doric order. The marble for it was found at a nearby region, Agrileza.

    Underneath the temple...

by AndyRG Written Feb 25, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: On the western part of Cape Sounio, you can swim at this nice beach or have your lunch/dinner there, exactly under the temple. It will be something you'll surely remember... The beach of Legrena is even more west.

    The light of the sun

    Yellow and blue...

Favorite thing: The physical light during the sunrise or the sunset is the best we can have, ideal for taking pictures or feeling the magic of the moments. The columnes have only 16 cannelures, instead of 20, in order to be a better protection from the saltiness of the sea.

    On the east...

    The sun almost dead...

Favorite thing: Next to the temple, on the (left) eastern part of the cape, you can see this rock. From its colour, it is obvious that the sun will not rise for much more time...
