When walking in the hills, especially during the first month of Spring, be very careful and on the look out for the famous Poisonous Snake of Greece ....THE OCHIA! It's bite can be fatal and there are few, if any antidotes available in pharmacies and hospitals in Greece!!!
I took this photo at the Monastery of Agios Pavlos in Plaka above Lavrion on 3rd April, 2009. The Nun there, who was clearing the overgrowth in their garden told me that this was the second snake they had killed in the past week. She also told me that this snake must be killed by smashing the head, or else the snake does not die, even if it is cut into two pieces, and that it will 'regenerate' just as an earthworm does when it is cut!
The Ochia is a long, thin snake and is well camouflaged. It likes to sun itself on the rocks in the Spring time. If you have the misfortune of being bitten, your best bet is to find a Veterinarian, who may more likely have an antidote than even a hospital! This is because hunters more often have their hunting dogs bitten by these snakes than do local people. The Greeks do not climb up on the hillsides and rocks in the Spring time for this reason.

Street racing at GR-91
Greek National Road 91 (GR-91) is a highway running from the southernmost limit of the Athens metropolitan Area, in Vouliagmeni up to Sounio. It is a continuation of Poseidonos Avenue. It was first constructed in the 1950s as a one lane per direction road, but was later extended to two lanes per direction for half of its length. It has many extremely dangerous curves, and accidents happen on an almost daily basis. It is considered the deadliest road in Attica due to the street racing culture. Currently there has been an effort to increase police presence to prevent illegal racing and violation of speed limits which were common phenomena over the last 10 years.
I’ve learnt it when came back Moscow. If I knew it earlier I wouldn’t enjoyed the trip so much, ha-ha!

Chapel of Love?
When ever there has been a serious accident on the roads in Greece, loved ones will errect a small religious monument in rememberance of the persons involved. It may be however, that the people who had been in the mishap, were miraculously saved, and so the tribute is given in thanks. Unfortunately, the opposite is more often true...More than 2,000 deaths are recorded EVERY YEAR, in Greece. That means in 10 years, 20,000 people have been killed. What is the population of the town you live in? Do you know a town of a population of 20,000? Why? What can we do to change these disturbing statistics? And most of us are only shocked by war deaths...but isn't this a war???
The previous Warning Tip, with the car over the cliff, is at this 59th kilometre mark on the road to Sounion.

DRIVE WITH CAUTION on CURVES
Don't let the beautiful scenery distract you from the road in front of you! Even though the road from Varkiza to Sounion is perhaps one of the most beautiful in Attiki, the road is windy and curves abound.
For Heaven's Sake, if you don't want to see the Angels before your time, don't drink our famous Ouzo or any other alcohol beverage and then try to drive on this road. Always have a designated driver when drinking is involved....OR this might be your fate, or even worse, another innocent passing car that just happens to have the misfortune of getting in your drunken path.

Take Your Garbage With You!
I am so sorry to have to say these things, but as a teacher I feel it is my moral duty! PLEASE TAKE YOUR GARBAGE AND LITTER WITH YOU! Do you know that it take a plastic bag 200 YEARS TO DISINTEGRATE? Did you know that the handles of plastic bags are regularly found around sea turtles necks and have been know to kill them as well as other sea animals?
What is wrong with you people? DO YOU THINK THIS GARBAGE HAS LEGS? How easy was it to carry these things down to the beach with you all the way from the shop or your home? So, why is it so difficult to take it back and put it in a garbage disposal unit that you know is going to be collected with in the next 24 hours? Can't you see that these remote beaches along the beautiful coast of Sounion DO NOT have regular garbage pick up! Animals in the wild are cleaner than the human species!
This really disgusts me! I am so sorry to say, that the people who left their contribution to this mess, were young Greek people, driving very nice and new cars! I should have shouted at them, but I felt too angry at the time and knew that it would only result in a nasty confrontation! What does it take to make people understand the consequences of this left-behind garbage?
Every Spring, I am saddened by the garbage on the beaches in Greece! What can we do to make it better? One day at the beach to clean it up is not enough! What ideas do you have to change the mentality of these selfish and lazy people???
Looking at the sun about to set in the most beautiful way. A choir starts to sing adding an extra and very wonderful dimension to the sunset. But NO way some stupid warden start a chorus as taken rigth out of a greek tragedy. The warden had been looking in the rulebook and it says no singing even if everybudy els liked the choir to keep on singing. After the sunset we finde out that the choir was from a italian music academy who just liked to give away of there talent in regard to the beauty of the scenery

I have never seen such strong wind like at Sounio cape! I was almost carried away by the wind and you may see it at my pic.
I felt like a bird going to fly up!
