This neo-classical mansion (not the only one in the town) of the benefactor Sotiris Anargyros has a marvellous architecture. It is not far away from the modern harbour of Dapia.
Next to it is the Pefkakia square, where Bouboulina's Museum exists.

Many cannons?

Dapia means fortified place and lies at the (modern) harbour of Spetses. There is a great number of cannons to witness its presence.
A visit to Dapia gives you a great chance of taking a walk over the magnificent pebble mosaics.

'Make love, not war

I was in the town when the war in Iraq had already started, almost everyone in Greece was against it, in Spetses too...
There are beautiful blue beaches all along the town of Spetses. Most of them (Agia Marina, Agios Nikolaos, Agios Mamas, Kounoupitsa) are organized.

It is the cathedral of Spetses, situated along the way that leads to Baltiza. The old temple, as long as byzantine icons of Saint Nikolaos, can still be seen inside the church. His holiness is celebrated on 6/12, he is the patron saint of Spetses and all seamen.
It is believed that the dead body of the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte was in a barrel of rum for 3 years there.
At the masterly bell tower the revolutionary flag was raised in April 1821...

The Museum of Spetses houses exhibits which represent more than 4.000 years of the history of the island as: pottery and coins from ancient Greece, sculptures from the roman period, eastern and european pottery from the voyages of the Spetsiots at the end of the 18th century, byzantine and russian icons, relics from the war of independence (like the revolutionary flag of Spetses).

A nice mansion!

The Archaeological-Historical-Folkloric Museum of the island is housed at Hatzigiannis Mexis' mansion. It was established as a museum in 1939.
Hatzigiannis Mexis was the first notable of Spetses, also the first to promote the revolution in the islands of Spetses, Hydra and Psara at the war of independence, which started in 1821.

The entrance of the museum

This mansion with the unique wooden carved ceiling, located in Pefkakia (an area that lies behind the new port of Dapia), was established as a museum in 1992.
There is a tour during which the visitors listen about the life of L. Bouboulina and see personal objects of the heroine.

The imposing statue of hers (by N. Mela)

This statue is located at "Posidonio" square, where all the important festivities take place (the best known of which is the enactment of the naval battle on 8/9/1822, Armata festival).
The heroine L. Bouboulina is a symbol of the island. She spent all her fortune in providing food, arms and ammunition to her sailors and soldiers during the war of independence in 1821.

The town has been built at the eastern part of the island, next to the sea. The new and the old port, two museums, neo-classical buildings, narrow streets, cosy bars and restaurants make Spetses town interesting enough...

A narrow street in the night...

The town of Spetses has some very nice bars and restaurants, don''t forget that it is a cosmopolitan island. But the best is a nightly walk on the streets, romantic too...
