Our famous 'Green Door' house has now become the 'Blue Door' house! On most of the islands in Greece, there are specific colours that the houses may be painted by order of the local authorities. On the island of Spetses, the colours are Blue or Green.
With a new coat of paint, the house looks young and fresh with its periwinkle blue trimmings.
Anywhere you go in Greece in the Spring, is Beautiful! Spetses is no exception, and if anything, it is an exception in the sense that it is covered with flowers I've seen no where else but in Spetses.
My friend, whose wonderful house I am so lucky to be able to spend many days every year, has one of the most extraordinary flower gardens on the island. I know that my friend has planted her flowers, many by seeds, and has lovingly tended them over the past 10 years, until they have become the most beautiful garden of all..of course I am biased, but don't you agree that these blossums have their charm and appeal???
'Votsila' in Greek means 'stone.' 'Volta' means 'a walk.' You can go for many walks in Spetsis on these original and unique stone mosaic designed pavements.
Spetsis is famous for its stone-paved walkways and garden decorated patios. The artisians of this very old craft have even been sent to other countries in Europe to teach other local artisians this craft.
This patio was newly constructed to enhance the garden of the renovated house. It is an exact and precise compass, pointing to true North! An authentic addition to an island filled with nautical history.
As an extra-added space, the architect designed this unique space for the children to climb up and sleep in their own private loft! Friends of the children love visiting and exploring the island together on their bicycles as no cars are allowed to travel on the roads during the summer months.
The architect of this rennovation absolutely refused to allow any new alterations to the outside of the original construction of this typical Spetsis house. So, the outside looks exactly as it did in 1812. But, the inside has been completely modernized! It is truly a wonderful house.
The master bedroom has high-beamed ceilings with an added mosquito net for chemical-free sleep!
At the opposite end of the garden from the main house, sits a newly constructed building with three individual apartments for guests! Each guest room has it's own private toilet. The largest of the three rooms, in the middle, has an open plan which included a small kitchen. All of the ceilings in the guest house and in the main house are accented by lovely old wooden beams!
As you walk along the narrow, cobbled-stone pathways, you may come across an unobtrusive, seemingly unimportant old door! Let not the 'cover' fool you! Let me assure you that there is much more than what the eye beholds!
Let me take you on a 'private tour of one of the 'oldest' newly renovated Spetisiotis houses!
Most tourist would never have the lucky opportunity of actually 'touring' a privately owned home, either on Spetsis or another other place in Greece unless you were a friend or with a friend of the family's.
Let me invite you to 'Virtually' view this magnificent old house that belongs to my best friend and her family.
This house was originally built in 1812, before the Greeks gained their independence from the Turkish Empire. One can easily imagine Bouboulina herself having visited the original owners and passing daily by the narrow pathway outside the main entrance. Infact, Bouboulina' house is just across the next lot!
I wonder what Bouboulina would have thought of the recently added swimming pool?
