    how to go there

by mindcrime Updated Mar 2, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    By plane
Athens Internation Airport is located 30km east of Athens city centre. There are taxis (35e to the center of Athens) but also connection by metro (8e) and express buses (5e) not only for Athens(X95) but also to Piraeus(X96), Kifissos/Liosion Bus Station(X93) Dafni Metro Station(X97), Kifisia(X92)

    By boat
If you need a boat to/from the islands or you arrive by cruise you will probably go to Piraeus port that serve most of the routes. It’s the biggest port but there are also 2 other ports in Attica, Rafina and Lavrio (this is very convenient for Kea island)

    By bus
For long distance buses in Attica region you can take buses from Aegyptou square in Athens city center (3’ walk from Victoria metro station)
For long distance buses away from Attica there are two different main bus stations serving different cities of Greece. So depending on your destination you can go to:
1)LIOSION Bus Station(take metro to Attiki station and then any bus going north on Liossion street for just a few stops)
It serves cities in Viotia province(Thiva, Livadia, Arahova etc), Volos, Evritania(Karpenisi), Karditsa, Larisa, Katerini, Trikala, Fokida/Fthiotida provinces (Lamia, Amfisa, Delfoi, Itea), Chalkida province(Aidipsos, Pirgos, Istiaia, Kimi, Karistos, Aliveri etc)
2)KIFISOU(also known as PELOPONISOU) Bus Station(take bus 051 at the corner of Menadrou and Zinonos streets near Omonoia square)
This one is bigger and serves all the cities in Peloponisos(Patra, Kalamata, Korinthos, Pirgos, Mesinia etc), Ipirus province(Ioannina, Arta, Throspotia, Igumenitsa, Preveza), Macedonia and other southern provinces (Thesaloniki, Serres, Kavala, Alexandroupoli etc)

    how to move around
In Athens you can easily walk around the city centre, most of the sites are in walking distance from Plaka district where most of the tourists stay.
There are also numerous buses, trolley buses, trams (convenient to chech some beach south of Athens) and 3 metro lines.
    Usually metro/subway opens at 05:00am and ends at 00:15 (02:00am on Friday/Saturday)
Since February 2010 there are 2 single tickets:
    a)one way ticket for bus/trolley/tram 1.20e
    b)ticket (valid for 90’) for metro/bus/trolley/tram 1.40e
you can change to any of the above during these 90 minutes.

Some other useful tickets/cards(not for buses/metro to airport):
    24h ticket(for buses/tram/metro/subway): 4euro
    weekly ticket(for buses/tram/metro/subway): 14euros
    Montly card(for buses/tram/metro/subway) 45euro
    Monthly card(for bus/trolley bus only) 20euro
    Yearly card(for buses/tram/metro/subway) 450euro
    Yearly card(fro buses/tram/trolley) 200euro
