Why Greece has the highest traffic fatalities in Europe, is an unanswerable phenomena! However educated the young are as to the dangers of the Greek road conditions and to the dangers of speed combined with alcohol, nothing seems to deter the Greek driver from risking his own life and those of other drivers on the roads. An especially dangerous road, is between Vouliagmeni Lake and Varkize and particularily on Thursday nights!!! My advise is to stay away from this stretch of curves between 12 midnight and 2-3am as it becomes a deadly 'race track' where money is bet on the fastest and in my mind, the stupidest drivers in Athens! My biggest question is to all, "Where are the Police???" Every year, more than 2,000 drivers are killed in traffice accidents in Greece. This to me, is worse than a war because it is preventable! In 5 years, that's 10,000 people dead! A small town wiped-out because of egotistic desires to 'be first!' Please drive defensively and with great caution when in Greece! Better yet, take the public transportation unless you have much experience driving in large European cities. Remember, 'Speed Kills!' Slow down and see the sights!
