Municipal market is my personal favourite. Not a large place indeed, it has been losing its local character for a couple of years now. If you don't mind typical tourist shops have a walk down Skridloff and enter the ever-busy market. Taste some cheese, pick an olive, sit down and enjoy seafood served in one of numerous family-run bars.

Skridloff - Leather Street. One of tourists' most popular spots in Chania. Very busy, always crowded, full of shops offering traditional leather products as well as fake branded stuff.

Take a stroll down Skridloff and consider getting yourself a nice gift, like a pair of leather slippers for only EUR 10.

  • Square - Chania
    Square
    by gale.blog.pl
Platia 1866 is - for me - the central spot of Chania. Maybe that's because I always start my walk from the bus station and then cross Platia 1866 on my way to Halidon or Market.

The square is a busy place but also a fine spot for a short rest or a snack in the shadow of a palm tree.

In the morning Platia 1866 serves as gathering point for temporary workers waiting to be hired for a couple of hours or days. I was a bit scared to find myself in the companion of those large buddies but they were quite calm and didn't seem to likely become violent.

  • Old Harbour Mosque - Chania
    Old Harbour Mosque
    by gale.blog.pl
This is one of the most picturous views of Chania, you'll find it on most of Chania postards. For a reason...

'The mosque of Kioutsouk Hassan or Giali Tzamissi
It is the only mosque preserved in the city and dates back to the second half of the 17th century. It was erected in honour of Kioutsouk Hassan, the first garrison commander of Chania and after a research conducted by the 13th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, it has been discovered that there used to be a one-roomed temple in its current position. The mosque is a cubic-shaped building covered by a large hemispherical dome without a spandrel supported by four elaborate stone arches. At its western and northern part, it is surrounded by an arcade roofed by six small domes without a spandrel.
Initially the arcade was unroofed, as it was usually the case in mosques. Around 1880, the arcade was covered, while arch-shaped openings were added giving to it a strong neoclassical style. The temple Kioutsouk (small) Hassan or Giali Tzamissi (seaside mosque), as it was commonly called, a brilliant sample of Islamic art of the Renaissance was a work of an Armenian architect, who had constructed another similar mosque in 'Spaniako', a village in the county of 'Selino'. The mosque, in the yard of which there were palm trees and graves of pashas and janissaries, stopped operating in 1923 and today it is restored without the small and picturesque minaret demolished in 1920 (according to other sources in 1939). It has been occasionally used as an Archaeological Museum of Chania, a storehouse, a museum of folklore art, an Information Office of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO), while recently it has been used as an event and exhibition hall.'

    Halidon
    by gale.blog.pl
Halidon is the backbone of Chania. It runs from Platia 1866 to Platia Syndrivani, i.e. the most popular port promenade.

The street is full of tourist shops, travel and car rental agencies. If you wish to spend a lot of money just drop into one of those shops ;)

    Small Piece of Exhibition
    by gale.blog.pl, 4 more photos
My guidebook said that this museum was nothing really special so I went there without much hope for anything interesting.

Anyway, we entered the building at 3:40 PM and approached cashier's desk intending to get myself a ticket. The gentleman behind the desk however let us in without a ticket as the museum was closing on 4 PM.

I found the exhibition quite interesting so I was really sorry that we only had 20 minutes or so to run through all the exhibitions.

    Entrance fee EUR 2.00

    Close View of the Arsenals
    by gale.blog.pl
As soon as you reach the Old Harbour, turn right and walk right. I adore the Shipyards, they are large and sound, something really great!

'The need for the presence of the Venician fleet in Crete forced Venice to build shipyards, (Arsenali or Neoria) where the ships were repaired in winter time. The south complex was completed in 1599, with the construction of 17 Neoria. In 1607 the construction of five more Neoria begins on the eastern basin of the harbour. These are known as the Moro Neoria and only two were ever completed. Today only 7 survive out of the 17. In their original form they were open on the side of the sea. The ceilings are arched, and they are connected with arched openings of the same thickness as the walls.'

By the way, Venetian architecture is present not only in Chania but also in Rethymno. In 13th century Chania went under the rule of the Venetians who left quite a lot of architectural remains here.

The Cathedral of the Presentation of Virgin Mary

  • Chania Cathedral - Chania
    Chania Cathedral
    by gale.blog.pl
In tourist season the square in front of the Cathedral is very busy - it's so cose to Halidon and Skridloff, as well as Old Harbour.

...And I'm very ashamed that I never entered the building... :(

"The present Cathedral was built on the site of an older church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This church had been converted into a soap-factory and belonged to the Turkish dignitary Moustafa Pasha Giritli. The construction of the church was completed in 1860 in the style of a three aisle Basilica. The middle aisle, covered by a pointed arch, is elevated. The other aisles are covered by cross-ribbed vaults and are divided vertically by the women?s balcony. On the north side of the temple is the tall bell-tower. The architectural elements of the temple are associated more with the tradition developed in the period of the Venician occupation. That is: sculptured pseudo-pillars, cornices and arched openings. The east wall is decorated with large and impressive religious paintings, the works of G. Kalliterakis, G. Stravrakis, E. Tripolitakis and D. Kokotsis."

Besides staying in Omalos at the mouth of the gorge, Hania is the closest and best base camp for the long trek. The first bus bound for the entrance to the gorge leaves Hania at 6:15. I recomemend taking as early a bus as possible, because the tour groups arrive en masse at around 10.

Please see my Samaria Gorge tips for all the information on the hike itself.

Housed in a renovated church, the Archaeological Museum of Hania contains the "normal" Greek museum stuff: jewelry, statues, inscriptions, weapons, coins, etc.

These artifacts are from mainly western Crete, but other areas as well, and date from the Neolithic to the Roman era.
