The worst think it can happen to you on Crete is if you have a nice bottle of Ouzo, or any other fantastic local alcohol and you are sitting at the table on one of Chanias street. As you know, (or you will know sooner or later) most of chania's streets are going up or down the hill. So if you position your chair on the wrong side of the table and your table is slanted downwords from you.....more you pour from your bottle, farther the bottle is sliding down from you. So, be aware! Make sure you sit on the right side of the table so more you drink, closer your bottle is!!!! I have been to Crete twice already and am going in Summer 2007 one more time, and from my experience (and experience of my beloved aunt who went there 7 times and still going..), there is no bigger denger on Crete you have to be warn from!!! (well maybe mosquitos...)

Be aware of parking situation in Chania. When we were in Chania we stayed in the Old Town so it was very convinient for us to park our rented car on teh parking lot next to the Fortezza. What looks like half empty parking during the day it becames a zoo at night. Everybody cames to Chania after sunset, and the parking lot is a one big chaos. People are parking everywhere, forget the parking spots. Every piece of the sidewalk and grass is taken by the cars. My advice is, when you are renting a car make sure there is no deductible for scratches and such. If there is a deductible (usually 200-400 Euro per accident) avoid that parking lot late evening.

Chania is not your typical beach resort however there are a number of bars and these tend to remain open until the early hours of the morning. Rubbish collection and deliveries by two stroke engined vehicles in the early morning. All this can make Chania a pretty noisy place, I didn't sleep much the night I stayed there! Leave a Comment

Well i cant think of any serious dangers! FlirtingExpect some flirting From Greek males! Usually this comes in forms of looks, pick up lines but essentially its harmless fun and most seem to respect the boundaries if you are clear that you are uncomfortable or not interested. But if you are a female, expect some of that! Traffic! Well its a bit crazy! Cars travel on the right side of the road, horns are used liberally for any reason at all! There are motobikes everywhere cutting through the traffic! Road rules largely are not obeyed! Obviously the traffic is worse in the town. Too many cars- very narrow streets-few traffic lights! Motobikes seem to be the best for in town private travel- if you are brave enough to drive at all! Parking Well there is not much of it in the centre of the town especially the closer you get to the venetian harbour/old city and the market. But 2-3 km out of the town things get better!Still the best way to get into town is by bus, taxi or motorbike.

It doesn't happen often, but a heavy rain can cause park officials to close Samaria Gorge until the waters recede. This can sometime take 2-3 days. If you are planning to hike the gorge and it has rained recently, be sure to call ahead and make sure the trail is open before you make the trip. P.S.: Wear good running/hiking shoes, and take a swimsuit to jump in the water when you get done! Leave a Comment
