    Elafonisi

by mingul Written Aug 10, 2009

Elafonisi is one of the best beaches I have visited in Europe. It has a very exotic scent compared to other Mediterranean beaches and in my opinion it is a very worthwhile place to visit. Situated in the south-western corner of Crete Elafonisi has no permanent residents and it is famous for being the last stop from Europe to Africa for the migrating birds.

Across the sandy beach one can see the Elafonisi Island which can be reached by foot through the shallow crystal clear waters. Let's not forget the sand on Elafonisi beach which has some wonderful shades of pink. On the beach there are no tavernas, however there are 2-3 beach bars (from which you can buy cold drinks, coffee and sandwiches) run by the local authority

Reaching Elafonisi can be done in two very separate ways:

    1. (Reccomended for cautious persons). Before reaching Kissamos from the National Road take the left road to Elafonisi (marked as Elafonisi Old Road) and keep it until you reach Kefali. There you will take the road to Elafonisi (clearly marked) and reach it easy as the final kilometers are a new road and pretty wide. Total length from Kissamos: around 40-45 km.

    2. (Reccomended for the more adventurous persons). You can reach Elafonisi also on the road from Kissamos to Platanos and Sfinari. The road is beautiful and whenever you are able to stop there is a beautiful scenery waiting to be photographed. However bear in mind that the road is extremely narrow and has a lot of curves and places where you literally can't see what can come from the opposite way. Luckily there's not a lot of traffic on that side but still it is a road where you can't make any mistake or you will end up in the sea. I am not a very scary person when it comes to more demanding drives but I must admit that this road being done for the first time in my life tired me a bit and I was happy when I reached my destination. The last part is from the junction at Kefali (already mentioned) and is really a treat after the first challenging section. Total length from Kissamos: around 60 km.

Stroll around the town, visit small local shops and bakeries. Have a small cup of Greek coffee in the central square or a glass of Mythos, local beer in one of numerous taverns along the seaside.
