Motorbike Hire

by nickandchris

In 1984 we flew to Iraklion and hired a motorbike. We toured extensively, staying in different places every couple of days.We thought the motorbike was something like a 150cc. and wondered why it struggled over some of the mountain roads. There was a sticker over the engine capacity which gradually wore off as the holiday progressed. It turned out it was only a 50cc.!!!! Still, it did us proud, two up with rucksak and all. We were never offered helmets and in those days we didn't even think about it, being young and foolish. Fortunately we didn't come to grief (Nick knew how to handle a bike) but I wouldn't do it now without helmet.

You'll Get There In The End........

by nickandchris

In 1992 this was still a very typical method of transport for Greeks everywhere, usually with a dog in the back. We love seeing the old rotavator type vehicles, (reminds us of The Goods in The Good Life), not such a common sight nowadays. Tractors, pick-ups and even quad bikes are more the norm in these modern times.

Hire-Car

by nickandchris

Crete is such a huge island and distances are great. I know there is a reasonable bus service but it does not reach every far flung corner. If you have the finances, hire a car and do your own thing. Not everyone wants to be beholden to hot, crowded buses. There are SO many places to see and if you only have a short time it's far less time consuming than relying on once a day buses. Before children, we always hired motorbikes. We didn't even wear helmets in those days. I wouldn't be too keen on doing this now.

I'll Take The High Road And You Take The Low

Now then, which way shall we go?? It is not unusual to see a place signposted twice, in opposite directions. After all,we are in Greece!!Left or right?? Your guess is as good as mine.
