Vassae
Although not strictly speaking in Elia it's close enough to include it here. The position of Vassae is stunning. The word Vassae means ravines. It's 14km from Andrhitsena on a good road surrounded by spectacular scenery. The Temple of Apollo stands at 1200m. and was built in 420 BC and was reputedly designed by Iktinos, architect of the Parthenon. It was built by the people of Figlia, dedicating it to Apollo Epicurus (the helper) who delivered them from the plague in 429BCIt's spectacular site is probably the most remote in Greece and is definitely worth a visit..When we visited it was difficult to percieve the size and grandness of it as it was enclosed in the most amazing tent, (a work of art itself!!) Inside restoration was taking place. The column remains were enormous and very impressive.Open daily 8.30am to 8 00pm summer . 8.30am to 3 00pm winter.
