Thermal Pool, Kaiafa

We discovered this pool before reaching the lake. It was a beautiful blue/green, just like our mountain pools at home which are freezing so it was a shock to find it so hot to bathe in!! We emerged rather smelly and the pong remained with us for a long time. I don't know whether it had any beneficial properties but we didn't feel ill!!

Kaiafas Lake

The lagoon here is sulphurous, catching the thermal waters from two cave springs.Loutra Kaiafa is now a well established spa resort with dozens of hotels and accommodation along the lake shores catering mainly for a Greek clientele.A shuttle boat takes you to the springs on an island in the lagoon.

This old-fashioned hill village sits on the hillside looking down the Alfios Valley.The buildings are stone and line narrow, cobbled streets. Most have old fashioned, precarious looking wooden balconies.A stream gushes through the village which is channelled into the fountain in a plane tree in the central Platea.The road we travelled to Andhritsena from Krestena was the most major on the map but it still took ages due to the twisting, narrow road. We passed pretty villages, perched on ledges.Although nothing much appears to have changed here in years, it recieves many tourists and the coaches pile in. It can become extremely busy.We had a pretty poor meal here, served by a doddery old man who looked as though he was about to expire at any moment. The food wasn't up to much and the bread was stale. We did wonder whether it had anything to do with being on the "tourist trail" or maybe we...
