    Panagia Kremniotissa

After reading Irene's (Irine_29) travelogue I had to see this church. And I survived the 5 kilometers of narrow bumpy "road" (that thing cannot be called a road) at the edge of the cliff, on a rented scooter. Only try this if you are an experienced driver/ rider, it's quite dangerous. On the other hand, our Panagia (Virgin Mary) always looks after us and never lets anything bad happen! :-)
On the way to Pahia Ammos, at some point, you will probably see the little church on the mountain in front of you. There is a sign on the street, that shows you where to turn left.

Take "the road less travelled by" and you will be generously rewarded. We were in the middle of nowhere and had no idea where we were going, we were about to turn back when we came across an old shepherd who told us how to reach this waterfall... it is not on the rivers Fonias nor on Gria Vathra. I am not telling you how to get there, because discovering places like this on your own is most of the fun. (Besides, I'd like to be alone again when I go back there, to have it all to myself!!)

    Waterfall up

On the North coast there are Many small rivers and gorges, My Tip is to pick one of these for yourself and see how far you can get up it !!!??? We picked a cracker and had a Terrific day out following the river up into the hills, climbing up past Beautiful waterfalls and eventually finding our own Special place to go for a swim !!! a Really adventurous day out and one that turned out to be one of our Best days on the Island !!!

    Head for the Hills !!!!!??????

    Rob in the Hills !!!

Heading for the High Hills is somewhat easier said than done in Samothraki due to the Lack of Good maps and Guidebooks ---- But this is the price you pay for visiting one of the lesser known Greek Islands and I for one think that it is a Small Price !!
The path to the top of Mount Fengari starts from just outside Hora, a left hand turn on the road to Alonia, about 100 metre after leaving Hora there is a sign post with " Sotira ", down a small dirt track, after about 2k you will come to the small church of Agios Georgious and then the track starts to head steeply up the hill-side !! After about another hours walking there is a Good Spring then the track ends and there is a narrow footpath to continue on over loose scree !! there are red dots of paint to help you stay on the right path, after about another half an hour the path crosses a small river at the top of a waterfall and this is as far as we got !! This path is Not for the faint of heart as there are some terrific drops and sometimes the path is very exposed, If we had more time we Might have ventured further ???? but as the day was getting on we decided it was best to turn around !!!!! -- Maybe another time !!!????
