Karpenissi

by Lilasel

Among the town's most characteristic features are the workshops that produce hand-made brass bells for animals. When eating at a Karpenissi taverna, try the feta cheese roasted in wax paper and the local sausages, and before you leave buy some goat butter and cheese, chestnuts and walnuts. I've tried delicious hot pie with ham and cheese "Peinirli".You'll also be impressed by the lovely hand-wooven fabrics made on traditional looms and the skillfully carved wooden objects on sale in the shops.

Evinos river

by Lilasel

The river is said to have derived its name from Evenus, the son of Ares, and the father of Marpessa. When his daughter was carried off by Idas, the son of Aphareus, he pursued the ravisher; but being unable to overtake him he threw himself into the river, which was henceforward called after him.

Evinos river

Evinos river flows in the south part of Central Greece and is very picturesque.Greek Mythology says that one time, when Heracles and his second wife Deianira were traveling, they needed to cross the Evinos River. The ferryman was a centaur named Nessos. When Nessos carried Deianira across the river, he tried to assault her and Heracles ran to her rescue when he heard her screams. He shot Nessos in the heart with one of his arrows. This tale is, perhaps, only a figure of the impetuosity of the river.

Karpenissi

Karpenissi, capital of the prefecture, is located at the foothills of Mt. Timfristos, at an altitude of 960 metres. It most probably owes its name to the maple trees that abounded in the area in the 12th century (Carpen = maple tree, Carpenis = land of maple trees). The clear atmosphere, the dry healthy climate, the plane trees, fir and chestnut forests make Karpenissi an ideal place for winter and summer holidays.

Evrytania

by Lilasel

According to Homer, the first known inhabitants of northern Evrytania were the Dolopes, who took part in the campaign against Troy. During the Byzantine era, the people of Evrytania had the rare privileges of self-government and tax exemption. For this reason the northern part of the district was also called "Agrafa", (unwritten), because the residents were not listed in the Imperial tax registers.

Andreas

I like this picture! Andreas was very joyful seeing so much snow. For me it was less exotic because I have more real winter days in Latvia than poor Andreas in Greece :-)

Independence Day

by Lilasel

It was an Independence Day in Greece on 25th of March - that day we came to Karpenissi. That's why at this picture you can see the town decorated by many greek flags.
