If you want to travel to Delphi by public transport then bus is the thing as there is no train service to Delphi.
Delphi is linked to the major cities in Greece by bus and also to all the main towns in the are.
The bus station is located pretty much in the center of town and you better go there and chack the times and prices as they can change very quickly.

Delphi is situated 180 km from Athens.
The Trans European Footpath E4 passes through the east end of Modern Delphi.
You may get to Delphi by bus from Athens (3 hours, 6 times a day) for 10€, from Itea (30 minutes, 7 times a day) for 2€, from Patras (1 time a day) 9€.
The best way – by excursion bus (like me).
Tourist Office located at Od. Vasileon Pavlou and Frederkis. Open Mo-Fri 7.30-14.30.

I don't really think it makes sense to pay Euros 80 for a day trip to Delphi from Athens unless you are really lazy. Just get a bus from the bus station located by Laisson street, Athens. DON'T stop at 260, Laisson street which is an official address which is nothing but a hardware store. The bus station is located in the next alle. I was totally surprised to see such bus station. Its a quite a bit of distance so take a metro to go this bus station. (Get directions from the hotel reception) It will be advisable to get your tickets a day or two in advance. Take a bus at 7.30 so you are in Delphi by 10.30. (Ideal would be to reach Delphi on the last bus and start visiting these places early morning as soon as they open so you will avoid the heat totally) As soon as you get off from the bus station, get yourself a return booking on a bus departing at 15.30 or so (This won't be possible if you arrive by the last bus, the ticket office which is just a store, closes at about 17.00 hrs). There is extra bus on sundays at 21.30 hrs. Check this out at Athens bus station while buying the ticket if you plan to use it. 6 hours are more than enough for you to check out the museum and the archaeological site carefully. It may be a good idea to visit archaeological site first and then museum to avoid the mid day heat. Apart from these two places, there is not much to see in Delphi.
A view of the valley from Delphi theatre is absolutely amazing. The stadium is not so appealing but museum is worth visiting.

As Stephanie and Gerry were going for a day trip to Delphi, they asked Hans and I if we would like to come along. Delphi was on my list of places I really wanted to see, so I immediately said yes. So Tuesday morning, Hans and I took the local bus to Athens and met up with them at their Hotel. We were going to be driven to Delphi by Harry. He is an awesome guy who takes very good care of his customers and drives folks around in his immaculate, bright yellow Mercedes-Benz. He's a wonderful driver and funny too. We all had a great time in his Taxi. Thanks Harry for showing us around.

Delphi is compact enough to walk around the main sites and the town itself but if you do feel like putting your feet up there is this little novelty road train which loops around. I didn't actually use it but I think it was free of charge when I was there though that may have been because it was May and so out-of-season.

Travelling from the centre of Athens out to Delphi there are 6 daily departures from the bus station at Liossion ( a 10 minute walk North from Larissa Metro up Dheliyianni ) with a journey time of 3 hours and a one-way fare of 12.60 euro. This is a pretty spectacular journey as you get out of Athens and up into the mountains and is broken for a break at the Erato Hotel about halfway where you can stretch your legs and grab a quick snack - read beer and cigarette in my case!

There is a cute little trolley train that runs through Delphi. It is a nice break from walking up the hills. It doesn't go down every road, but it most likely runs somewhere near where you are staying. It's also a nice way to meet locals.

Seeing as there are no trains to Delphi, the best way to get from Athens to the ruins is by bus. That is, unless you have a car, which I did not. Anyway, buses to Delphi leave from the not-too-easy-to-find Terminal B, at Liossion 260. You can use bus route 024 to get to the station, I used the metro-then-walk-five-miles-route. Take the bus...
There are 6 buses to Delphi per day, and the one way trip will cost you 10 Euro. It is only about a 3 hour trip, but the bus stops for a snack and potty break anyway.

I saw this tiny vehicle parked along the overlook in modern Delphi. Very appropriate method of transportation, seeing how narrow the roads are up in these mountains. On the other hand, we got here on a tour bus as part of a daytrip from Athens and it was very, very nice to leave the driving to someone else, let me tell you!

Getting to Delphi
There are many ways to get to Delphi. There are several local buses a day to and from Athens. The trip takes about three hours and will cost around $10. In the summer book early because space is scarce.
