" Plantation": Different menu every night
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • "We used the Plantation restaurant on most occasions, I liked the layout plus the fact you can eat out in the open at the rear of the ship enjoying the weather and sunsets.
We never had any problems with the Plantation, the staff were always helpful and worked very hard and long hours.
The menu was different everyday, normally themed (Asian,Greek,French etc)
Plenty of different choices, smoothies for breakfast ,full breakfast or cereals, the choice is yours.
The restaurant was kept clean always and most tables were kept clear of dishes etc.
They have a hygiene policy was very good,as soon as you enter the restaurant you must use the cleaning gel provided, use the tongs provided and not fingers.
The only minor moan is ,the travel Agent implied that all soft drinks were free! this is not the case coffee, tea, fruit juices are.but not fizzy drinks.
I personally think this is something ocean Village should address.

First tavern after the Venetian fortress: Awesome sea food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Its a very cosy restaurant quite crowded with a superb view of the sea...
The funniest thing is that the waiters have to confront with Heraklion mad traffic & to cross the street every time they bring food (la cuisine & the restaurant are on the other side of the street than the terrace).

The seafood is awesome. The best were:
    - baked squid
    - fresh calamari
    - yogurt with blue cheese

Papadakis: Terrific food with a view?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • "Papadakis" tavern in Rogdia village, at 6km west of Heraclion. A village hanging from a hill ,a superb Cretan cuisine served against an amazing view of Heraclion city and port. As a friend of mine said"it is the only time when i got to eat great food in a place with a view"!

Choose between a lot of appetizers like fried rabbit, stuffed zuccini flowers, snails(god,i don't eat them but some people find them great),meatballs(not like the ones you've tasted so far),Cretan cheese,"dakos" salad(tomato,skim-milk cheese, oregano, olive oil served on a barley bread roll),fava beans etc.
And drink good quality "raki"(it is the Cretan variant of ouzo). And nicely roasted meat for the main dish.(i believe fish is not their highlight)

When you enter this cozy restaurant you will feel like at home. It is excellently decorated and colors are stylish. In front of this restaurant some ofthe locals drew image on the walls that u gain nice view when enjoying your meal. There is silent and peaceful corner of the city, no tourists (till u all who read this will go there) at all. Owner of the restaurant is friendly lady speaking English very well. She will give you advices and tips where to go for free. Her menu is written in excellent English so you gain full service there.

We tried the complete menu from starter to dessert and I can't complaint on anything we got. Musseln with cheese and tomato sauce with basilico were simply excellent. Bread, too. Then we continued with grilled specialities served on plate for two (but it is enough for three people) with special portion of fried potatoes (no chips, fried potatoes big cuts) and of course greek salad (excellent feta and lots of olives ... even I don't eat them) and finally when we were full for next two days :) we got dessert - special Greek candised fruits on four separated small plates (cherries, limets, strawberries and sweet chestnuts). As a gift from the owner we also got special drink RAKI ... Except this we tried Greek beer, Ice coffee, black coffee and homemade red wine. So, Poppy's kitchen proves that everything is home made there. I highly reccomend it

    Nea Ionia: Home-like food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Have you heard about cretan - mediterranean diet? Here is a nice day restaurant in the heart of the city to taste some home-like food.

All vegetable stews. Avoid meat and fish which you can eat to any other taverna and eat here some cooked vegetables. Believe me they are delicious, based on fresh locally produced vegetables!

The best view by far! Marina cafe is the ideal place for daytime to have a cafe or refreshment and a light snack, viewing the majestic Koules castle and all the small boats on the marina of the old port.

Have a cold coffee and relax in the scenery of an old cretan - mediterreanean port.

Pagopiion: A cold beer on st. Titus sq.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Pagopiion is a bistrot on the beautiful st. Titus sq. It is open all day long until late and you can have here a cold beer, coffee and if you want to eat, you can choose from its eclectic dish menu.

What makes Pagopiion really special to me is the place where it is located. On my favourite st. Titus sq. which is beautiful day around. However Pagopiion is worth visiting for itself. An eclectic place on its interior and on its dishes as well.

It is a small grill souvlaki restaurant with few tables. You can eat here or take away the best souvlaki in town, and let me tell you in Greece!

Ask it "Thraka with gyros". You will take roasted bread filled with gyros (pork meat) and potatos, tzatziki and tomato.
Any other dish you choose is really delicious!

Heraklion is appreciated in Greece as having nice seafood restaurants, the so-called "ouzeri". The best ouzeri for me is "Vardia" on the port. Eat here roasted octapus and squib and shrimps and fried small fish "marida". Accompany them with a greek salad and ouzo.
Make it on a late lunch at about 3-4 o'clock and afterwards have a coffee a sweet dessert and then go to sleep! Beloved habits!

All the seafood served. My favourite is squib, but try them all.

Trout and salmon roasted in a fabulous mountain scenery. It is both a fish farm and a tavern, serving the fish they maintain. It is located on the south side of mountain Psiloreitis, about 50 km south of Heraklion city, close to Zaros lake, see the tip about Off the beaten path. The tavern serves trout and salmon from the fish farm and also any other dish you expect from a tavern. George the owner is a friendly, young man, keen to help you with whatever information you need about the region.

Roasted trout of course! It comes from the pool in which it is maintained, right to your plate. Of course it gets roasted on the way!! For a fish which is about one portion (approx. 320 kgrs) you pay 8 Euros.
