Ice Factory in Iraklio, nearby the harbor, situated at a little square with the terrace underneath the trees. It looks like a little French cafe, and when you go inside its a very modern cafe/restaurant. Very friendly staff, (sometimes too friendly) We were told its a place were the 'important' people from Crete eat. We did see a lot of businessmen/women overthere and not a lot of tourists (thankfully).
Favorite Dish: the moussaka was lovely

Plenty of small taverns, restaurants, Greek-style-fast food (serving souvlaki, gyros ...). But please don't try only these when ordering something. There are more, even greater plates, than moussaka, tzatziki, gyros, souvlaki.
It would be better to go to a village and try to find some local plates, or try some cheese, yogurt, honey etc. They are great.

We were there in April 2000 for the Greek Orthodox Church Easter Week. On Easter Sunday the Pascal Lamb is eaten. We were invited to join in the village meal. (traditionally meat is eaten for the first time in the week.

We stopped in this place to enjoy cup of java and orange juice.
We really enjoyed the atmosphere and our drinks.
It is a great place full of tourists and local men.

Favorite Dish: The seafood pockets...they are delicious...they are famous for their seafood but even if you don't like seafood, they have meat and vegeterian dishes that are also mouth watering.
