EPIRUS---The region northwest...
  • Tip Rating:
  • EPIRUS---The region northwest of the country, this part of Greece has many unique scenic beauties as well as a separate cultural identity. Its baundaries are formed by mountain chain of the 'Pindus' in the northeast, and the Ionian coastline in the west. It comprises of 4 administrative provinces : Ioannina, Thesprotia, Preveza and Arta.
    IOANNINA (YANINA):
Although an old town with a distinctive past, the modern city is built on a scope approximately 500mt above lake Pamvotis. It is a city with much natural beauty and interesting history, which can be seen in its folk art museum which has many displays of local grafts; its archaeological museum with many significant finds from all over Epirus, and ,its wax museum of Vrellis which displays wax effigies of famous perconalities of the Greek revolution.

In the middle of lake Pamvotis is a tiny islet - nissaki - which can be visited by small boats and has 2 major sights worth visiting; the philanthropinon monastery which among other things depicts the seven sages of antiquity and the pre-revolutionary museum.

Dodoni - one of the oldest archaeological sites in Greece, is a very important place of interest and with its ancient theatre where theatrical performances are still held to this day in the summer months, should be on everyones list as a must to visit.

Metsovo - located 60km east of Ioannina, is truly one of the most graphic villages in Greece. The people of this town keep many of the traditions of woodcarving and weaving alive to this day as well as producing the most delicious cheeces and wines! Metsovo is also a popular ski resort in the winter months and a hiker's paradice in the warmer months.

The Zagorohoria - or raughly translated means the villages of Zagoria , comprice of over 40 traditional settlements and have as natural borders the river Aoos, Mt.Mitsikeli and Mt.Gamila. This area is rich in animal and plant life. The houses are unique in that they are constructed of stone. Kayaking in the river Aoos is an activity that is fast catching on due to its fast waters.

Mitsikeli and is undoubtedly a picturesque village which distances only 15 minutes from the legendary town of Ioannina and at an altitude of 940mIt also overlooks the unique lake of Ioannina, the historical island in the lake and the legendary town of Ioannina itself.

    Ioannina General Tips Tip (Untitled)
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is something particular in the air of this city. Shady, rainy, humid and immersed in the melancholic mist that came out of the mysterious waters of lake Pamvotis during the winter... In the summer it transforms into a romantic, voluptuous maid and seems that the ghosts of Ali Pasha and lady Frosyni fly over the shady alleys of the city.... In the summer evenings, the 'passegiata' is filled of belly-exposing, young black eyed ladies with long black hairs and milky skin, that seem to rise right from oriental fairy-tales of love, passion and … lust(!).... One and one thousand nights in Ali Pasha's Ioannina! :)

    visit DODONA ORACLE AND...
  • Tip Rating:
  • visit DODONA ORACLE AND THEATRE. Just 10 minutes by car from city center, this once most famous oracle of the entire ancient Greek world was hiden in obscurity until about some 100 years ago it was discovered and unearthened by a Greek archaeologist... Go to the place and feel why the ancient Greeks have chosen this spot as the place that Zeus father of all gods and humans would deliver his omens to the mortals!... Imagine that in ancient times the place and the gray, dark and silent mountains that surround the place giving to it an out of this world serenity was once covered by dense and thick forests of giant oak trees... As the unnoticed wind was mysterious weaving the leaves of the trees, the wise-men revealed Zeus wills through the 'mysterious whispers' of the trees... In the summer performances of ancient greek theater often take place. Due to repair works are now constructing a new 'theatre' of metal in a field next to the ancient theatre, in order to temporarily host the performances of the summer... I can't tell of the performance's quality but I am afraid that the modern aside the ancient theater wont fit my.. artistic and cultural sense! :)

  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit ZAGORI: While being in Ioannina and as you take a look around, you may will be disappointed by the poor landscape: Nude mountain slopes, deprived by any tree and vegetation seem unatractive and depressive! But here is the secret: Behind these indifferent mountains hides Epirus well kept secret, the famous ZAGORI or ZAGOROCHORIA region. A mountain area rich in natural beauties and fairy-tale little picturesque villages. A must **** to see! There are several interesting web sites with information on the place(do e search in google). Not to miss are Monodentri village with its breath-catching view of the Vikos Canyon (not recommended to acrophobics!), Papigo Village, Dilopho village (see photo) Voidomatis river and much more...

Kefalonia/Cefalonia - You must explore the island. I was based in the resort of Lassi during my visit but used it as a base to see other parts of the island whenever possible. To the north you have Fiskardo and parts Assos which retain much of their original charm and architecture (most of which was destroyed in the 1953 earth quake elsewhere). Fiskardo is a lovley harbour and well worth a visit, but accommodation is very espensive and your likley to tire of it after a day or so dispite its beauty despite the great taverns. You can catch a ferry to Sami from Fiskardo, enjoying the brief journey to Ithaka.
