Voidomatis river is a short river (about 16km long) that passes by Konitsa’s plain and ends up at Aoos river where they match through Albania and fall into Adriatic sea.
It’s a beautiful river, with clear waters and surrounded by full green around. It is ideal for kayak and rafting but also for hiking along its shores, you can’t swim though because the waters are very cold even during the summer (about 9’C) so we just tried to enjoy it a bit by walking next to it for some minutes and then we followed the path on the other side (pic 2) for some more minutes...
People from Epirus had built stone bridges along its way.
The old stone bridge of Kleidonia is the last stone bridge of Voidomatis river before the Konitsa plain.
It’s an one arch stone bridge that was very important in the old times because it connected Ioannina with Konitsa for those who travelled NW to other Ottoman areas in Albania and Montenegro. At the south side of the bridge (at Kleidi spot) have been found some significant paleontological discoveries that are kept at the village of Kleidonia (but we didn’t have time to check them)
The bridge was built in 1853 and costed 37,000 grossia (about 1 million euros in our days!)
It is famous for a murder that took place between 2 prerequisites of Agios Minas (one of the villages at West Zagori) for pride issues during a wedding ceremony when 4 people died!
From Ioannina drive north at the main highway towards Kalpaki (about 30km from Ioannina) and after 10 more kilometers turned right (there is a sign for the Old Stobe Bridge)
near the bridge we saw a detailed map for all the paths on the area
