Bright figure of the modern Greek history is John Capodistria who was born in Corfu. On the photo you can see the house (with the Greek national flag). Count Ioannis Antonios Kapodistrias (in Greek Ιωάννης Καποδίστριας - Ioannis Kapodistrias, in Italian Giovanni Capo d'Istria, Conte Capo d'Istria, and in Russian граф Иоан1085; Капо1076;ист
88;ия - Graf Ioann Kapodistriya) (February 11, 1776 – October 9, 1831) was a Greek diplomat of the Russian Empire and later first head of state of independent Greece. This house was built in 1835 by the Corfiot architect John Chronis, the old prefecture is a characteristic example of neo-classical architecture. It is situated in the upper part of the Spianada - northern end of Capodistria Street. The old prefecture stands on the site of the house which is the birthplace of Ioannis Capodistrias, the first governor of Greece. Kapodistrias is greatly honoured in Greece today. The University of Athens is named "Kapodistrian" in his honour; the Greek euro coin of 20 lepta bears his face, as did the 500 drachmas banknote before the introduction of the euro, and a local re-organisation programme that reduced the number of municipalities in the late 1990s also carries his name. The fears that Britain, France and Russia had of any liberal and Republican movement at the time, due to the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution, led them to insist on Greece becoming a monarchy after Kapodistria's death. see more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Capodistria Other Contact: Capodistria Street

Most guides (and even guidebooks) either ignore or dismiss Lefkimi, but anyone interested in how a Greek town works away from the bustle of tourism should not miss it. As you can read above we weren't interested in visiting Lefkimi in the first place, because we didn't know anything about it and didn't read any stimulating stories about it. We just drove towards it because of the attracktive and distinctive orange dome of the Agios Arsenos Church. We were not sorry about that! Another must see near Lefkimi is the lighthouse! The first lighthouses built in Greece on specific designs and in accordance with European standards were found on the Ionian island chain. Colonian English rule of these islands for a few decades ensured that several crucial sections of the Ioanian were navigable. Thus, from 1822 when the first English lighthouse was built on the island of Corfu, and up until 1864 when the Ionian islands were united with Greece, a large number of lighthouses were built, most of which operate even today. In 1825, the first floating lighthouse was built in Lefkimi. We didn't stay too long at the scene as it was already getting a bit late and we still needed to get back to Perama. Address: Village of Lefkimi. Directions: Situated at the south side of the island. It is a 40 km drive from the capital of Corfu, Corfu Town. Leave a Comment

Right after we parked the car we tried to grab a lunch. At a local bar called (we believe, can't remember proparly) Vegara, we tried to order some sandwiches. The owner tried to explain us in his best English that the sandwiches appear on the sign of the bar, but he didn't sell them! Bit of a weird situation, we guess. The owner stood next to our table and all of a sudden he went back into the kitchen and came back with 2 frozen pizzas and told us that this was the only thing he sold which could be eaten for lunch! So 20 minutes later we had 2 hot microwave pizzas on a plate! Well, with a nice cold beer it did taste okay :) Right after this historical lunch we had a walk through this largest town southern of the city of Corfu. We passed a picturesque canal which divides the town into two. Lefkimi has two striking churches to visit. One is the Agios Theodoros Church facing the main square and the other is the Agios Arsenos Church with its orange dome. We were sorry to see that both churches were closed. Address: Village of Lefkimi. Directions: Situated at the south side of the island. It is a 40 km drive from the capital of Corfu, Corfu Town. Leave a Comment

It was a day full of contrasts when we visited Lefkimi. One morning we drove by car to the south of the island of Corfu and we ended up in Kavos, which is dire and unrivaled for ugliness. It's for the mentally challenged package tourist who likes nothing better than 24 hour clubbing with bungee jumping and go-karting thrown in for light relief. When we drove through the town we saw gangs of youths looking for a "larf" give the place a hostile air of an English soccer town on match day! At that point we decided to leave Kavos as fast as possible and to explore some more of the real Corfy life. Driving over some hills toward the north we were attrackted by a distinctive orange dome of which we learned later that it was the dome of the Agios Arsenos Church at Lefkimi. It's located in the middle of a fertile plain full of olive trees and vineyards. The lovely village of Lefkimi is well of the beaten track and a huge step back in time. Donkeys are still used as transport and driving into the town we even spotted the odd Greek in traditional costume. Address: Village of Lefkimi. Directions: Situated at the south side of the island. During the season, Corfu is a something like a party island with a lot of festivities and celebrations. As an Cristian Ortodox country Greeks and Corfiots celebrates the days in hounour of the saints. Often, entire villages turn out – with parades, a street fair, and church services – to honour a saint. I take a few photos from the small village Sinarades (middle-west part of the island, near the Agios Gordis resort), where the local people in a wonderful way keeping their tradition. August 15 - The Dormition/Assumption of The Virgin Mary: national holiday with festivities the length and breadth of Corfu.

I guess we all agree on this on; there is nothing more exciting than going travelling - exploring another country, experiencing a different culture, travelling around in new ways, sampling the local cuisine and chatting to the local people for a different perspective on life. However during our travels we learned that there is one certain thing that you should be aware of and prepared for to make sure that the trip is as easy and enjoyable as possible. We always try to see everything once we're there, but this is not always an act of responsible travelling. We always talk to the locals and we know that they have the information about just the right spots to visit and how to undertake them. It will not only enhance your experiences but also avoid any unnecessary hassles. For us the travel tips we have written in this section made the most of our travel experience and we came home in the same happy, healthy state that we left. Leave a Comment
