Hellenic Lager

Favorite thing: Let’s make no secret of it. We both like a nice cold glass of beer. Being abroad is always a challenge to find a beer we like, which reflects our taste of having a beer. At Corfu (maybe the entire country of Greece) it was sometimes rather difficult. We found out that there are quite some local beers, only known in that particular area. But anyway, we did like the the Hellenic Lager.

Still under construction ...

TOWN SHOPS

Yours Truly Strolling down Corfu Town

Favorite thing: The main "CBD" area of Corfu Town has very much an English Colonial feel about it - this can be explained by the history of the island.

There are heaps of great cafes and restaurants ranging considerably in price.

The achitecture ranges from magnificant collonades to narrow paths and crubling buildings.

Foe people who know my pages, you will know I have a real thing for dirty/sexy places. Places that can be a bit dirty and different but retain a sexy charm. Corfu is one of those placs.

Favorite thing: The so-called Canal d'Amour, an interesting rock formation can be found in the Sidhari bay. According to a legend, the rocks are supposed to be two lovers turned into stone and if a man and a woman swim from one rock to the other, then their love will last forever.

St George

Favorite thing: In Benitses, as in most resorts, there are a number of water sports that you can take part in. One day, just sitting in the bar, we saw a stand on a pier that was doing paragliding. My friend went down to check how much it cost as she knew that I would do it. I said yes straightaway and it is one of the best things I have ever done! The feeling you get up there is amazing as is the view. I would recommend to anyone to try this!

Fondest memory: We made friends with a family from Britain who were staying in the same resort as us. One day they invited us to go with them to St George to where there was a sandy beach (as the ones in Benitses are rocky). We went and got ourselves sun loungers, made ourselves comfortable, and lay in the sun. Just a few minutes later, I saw something I have never seen before - men walking along the beach selling doughnuts! We made friends with one of them, a local named Kostas - his cousin owned a bar in Benitses and he invited us to meet him for a drink. We did so and ended up going out for dinner and had a fantastic night! If you go to St George and speak to the doughnut sellers, speak to Kostas and tell him Karen from Scotland is thinking of him!

Spianada-Liston

Favorite thing: Spianada or Esplanade the largest square in the Balkans.
Have your breakfast here. I used to do it with my aunt when I was a child.
On the north - western side of the Spianada is the Liston, an arcade of mansions modelled on the famous Parisian Rue de Rivoli.

Favorite thing: Over the old harbor stands the new fortress, which was built in 1570 by the Venetians. A big part of it was destroyed after an order given by the Great Forces during World War II. Today it is used by the Navy.

The Old Fortress

Favorite thing: I spent a lot of summers inside the Old Fortress because my uncle was in the Army and we had the privilege to stay there. At that time it was the summer resort for the Militaries' families.
During its turbulent history Corfu needed to entrench it self against its conquerors. In the beginning of the 8th century BC the Byzantines built the first walls which separated the fortress from the city. In the 16th century, the Venetians, fearing a Turkish attack, extended the bulwark by building a second and a third line of defense.Inside the fortress is the chapel of Saint George, which was built by the British in 1840.

Achillion

Favorite thing: Less than 10 miles from the city you come across the magnificent palace of the Queen of Austria Elizabeth, Achillion.
The Queen, whose life became a film, preferred Kerkyra during her cruise to overcome her problems.
She decided to buy the area where the Palace is situated today and to make her residence here. Her rooms were on the first floor.

Saint Spyridon's Church

Favorite thing: It is obvious the Italian influence to architecture of the building.
It is dedicated to Saint Spyridon (Agios Spyridon) who is the Saint of the island and according to the legends he saved the inhabitants of Corfu, in the past, from epidemics and he appeared twice as a monk, helping them against Turks in 1673 and in 1716.
