    Dont eat the bread

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Be aware that the bread and butter served with a meal is not COMPLIMENTARY and you will be charged 1 Euro per person for 2 slices of bread and a diddy tub of Lurpak.. Gone are the days of the complimentary Ouzo etc from days gone by.

Corfu is definately the most expensive of Ionian islands with a pint of Mythos costing 2.50 - 3.00 Euro

Finally on the upper side of the Spianada (Esplanade) stands a memorial to the British Lord High Commissioner Sir Thomas Maitland built in 1816 in the shape of a circular building with Ionian columns. It's also known for the 'cistern', because it covers the opening of an old water reservoir. At this side of the square some of the fine old mansions on Kapodistriou St. heve been converted into atmospheric hotels. We also learned that the square itself has been constructed similar to the royal gardens of Europe. It features some Venetian fountains, an acient aqueduct and a beautiful pavilion that hosts the activities of the local philharmonical bands during the summer.

For us it is clear that the local people all gather at the Spianada for their nightly stroll and to meet their acquaintances. Everyone is there, Sundays and holidays. It has become something natural and common and in its own way has become a part of their daily routine, something they feel at home with.

    Spianada - The Liston

by Jerelis Updated Jan 7, 2007

    Beautiful buildings at the Liston.

The arcades of the Liston (an impressive building complex northwest of the central square Spianada (Esplanade) were designed by a Frenchman, Mathieu de Lesseps, who built it in 1807. The name Liston comes from the Venetian practice of having a list of noble families in the Libro d'Oro (Golden Book), only those on this list were allowed to promenade there. It houses cafés and restaurants, where we were able to enjoy our coffee and taste the local specialties.

Opposite of the Liston is the Old Fortress and "Anthonas", the Municipal Gardens. In this garden you will find several statues and busts. At the northern end of the Spianada stands the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, one of the most elegant buildings in Corfu. Opposite of the west front of the palace is a really beautiful building which now houses the Reading Society of Corfu, the oldest cultural institute in modern Greece, founded in 1836. The Reading Society contains an unique library of Greek and foreign books as well as a large collection of manuscripts, newspapers, periodicals, paintings, maps and engravings mostly related to the Ionian Islands.

Spianada - One of the biggest square in Europe.

    Overview of the Spianada square.

When we first arrived in Kerkyra (Corfu Town) we were able to park the car at the Spianada (Esplanada) itself and we immediately felt that it was the heart of the town. Before even thinking about it we made a walk around the Spianada, one of the biggest square in Europe which is the hub of the Corfiot's life. This mixture of park and town square is one of the reasons Corfu Town remains such an attractive place. It offers relief from the packed streets in the summer, either on a park bench or in one of the elegant cages lining the square on the Liston, overlooking the cricket pitch.

The raised terrace was created for defensive purposes under Venetian rule and the square assumed its final form in more modern times under the French and British rulers of the island. Essentially it consists of two squares, divided in the middle by Viktoros Dousmani St., where you will find a taxi rank, carriages for hire and the municipal parking area.

    Don't Flush!!!

by huwhit Written Aug 24, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It's still a great place though!!!

    Ok, here we go!!!

This beautiful little Greek Island has a pitfall - it's a little behind in terms of infrastructure. The toilet and sewrage system on Corfu is not designed to handle toilet paper.

So, by all means, deposit your numbers one and two into the bowl - but not the paper.

Most toilets have a little bin in the cubicle with you, that is where the paper goes - this means things can get a little on the nose.

So don't flush the paper, only your waste!!!!

    Sidari + Canal d'amour

    Sidari

In my opinion it is a must see activity and at the same time a tourist trap. The Canal d'amour became the part of the holidays resort. It is crowded by tourists; restaurants and appartments start at 100 metres from the rock.

Be careful when booking a trip/excursion of any kind. In my case, when I went on a boat trip, it was packed with Bulgarians, and they had their own guide leader speaking Bulgarian, so obviously we did not understand anything that was being said about the places we visited! So ask the agent you are booking from, if there will be a guide speaking your language. This was the boat we went on 'Angelos'.

A lot of tourist shops sell CK, Ralph Lauren , Dolce and G.
It is funny to see the same t-shirt all over again with every time another name on it and so on...
Don't buy perfume with a brandname on it for 1500 drachmes. This is Fake and believe me it is Awful!
