The Wrath Of Kostas The Corfiot
  • Tip Rating:

  • "Why can't we get on the
    bus?"
    by Ciambella
    Send Photo to a Friend
    Don’t park on the space reserved for buses when you are in Corfu Town. Some of the bus drivers are rather testy about their territory.

    When the driver of an empty bus #7 found his space was partially invaded, he honked the horn repeatedly. When this did not yield any result, he parked the bus slanted-way to block the car that was in his space, all the while refusing to let passengers board. He got out, locked the bus, and went into a bar for a cup of coffee.

    The car owner appeared, looked at the angry crowd, and went in search of the bus driver. The owner pled his case, the crowd started yelling, but the bus driver’s face remained stony. Finishing his coffee, he threw the cup in the trash bin, crossed the street to the park, sat on the bench and lit a cigarette.

    With much struggle, the car owner squeezed his car out of the tight space and drove on.

    The crowd was now triple in size. The driver got back on the bus, locked the door behind him, pulled out his cell phone to talk to someone while lighting another cigarette, this time in a closed bus and under the No Smoking sign.

    After finishing with the third cigarette, he finally allowed passengers to board the smoke-filled bus.

    Was it over? Were we now safe to get on with our life? Apparently not. For the first five stops, the driver ignored the bell request from passengers who needed to get off. The conductor yelled at the driver. The driver yelled back. The passengers yelled at both. The rest of us sat in silence, hoping to be spared from the wrath. Charles and I prayed the driver would get over his anger by the time our stop came. He did. We got off. I said thank you. He said thank you back.

    Our trip should be looking up from that point on. Welcome to Corfu.

    The Fake Blue "I"
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beware that many of the accommodation finder agencies have the blue "I" sign in front of their office, the same blue "I" sign as the tourist information, or sometimes, even the whole term "Tourist Information Office". This is misleading.

    The official tourist information places in Corfu are located in San Rocco, New Port, and Kapodistrias Airport. Those are public offices where you can get free information about the town.

    The finder agencies are commercial enterprises, they don't do anything for free or have your interest at heart. They represent the tour operators, the accommodation owners, the car rental companies, and above all, themselves. Their business is making money, not doing public service.

    When and if you are in doubt about the sincerity of any of the agency, just walk away, don't allow yourself to be talked into anything you don't want to pay.

    You really need it ...

    For years, we have all been told of the importance of water. The general guideline has been to drink 2 litre of water each day. For a person who is not living an active lifestyle this may be enough, but if you are physically active, you need more water than that. That is especially true if you are hiking in the city of Corfu due to the fact the average temperature in the city is much higher than other areas at the island.

    Water is essential for everyone, especially if you are hiking. Water helps almost every part of the human body function properly. Our bodies are almost two-thirds water, and proper hydration is essential to keep your body functioning properly during the hike. Some of the things water does in the body are:
    * The brain is 75% water; even moderate dehydration can cause headaches and dizziness;
    * Water regulates body temperature, which is especially important here in the area where the temperatures can be so brutal;
    * Water carries nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body
    * Blood is 92% water;
    * Water protects and cushions vital organs;
    ·* Water converts food into energy (which is something you will need on a 3 to 4 hour hike…);
    * Muscles are 75% water, and you will use many muscles on a trail as you climb above the desert floor.

    Reading a map
  • Tip Rating:

  • "left", "no, other side",
    "what are you doing!"
    by Jerelis

    Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, the catchy title of the 1992 bestseller by John Gray, succinctly expresses an ancient dilemma. What--if anything--do men's and women's brains do differently?

    The general statement that men and women respond and behave differently under the same circumstances is true; For example, from the crib, male babies tend to be more aggressive and females more passive. As adults, in spatial operations, men have the edge in such skills as negotiating a maze, reading a map, and quickly discriminating between right and left. Men also perform better than women when asked to visualize an object and imagine rotating it. On the other hand, women tend to perform better than men when asked to look at objects of different shapes, sizes, and colors, and then to group them in some order.

    This still doesn't explain why Relinde turns the map all around when I'm asking for the road to travel, while I like the map at one point so I can better visualize our position. Help!

    Really bad drivers!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yep! The Corfu drivers drive like hypnotized. Must be the climate. I met enough locals and enough of them were injured from a car/bike accident. Watch it! If you consider renting a bike or a moped, think twice.

    Warning: Don't let the cab...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Warning: Don't let the cab drivers trick you. Try catching a ride with an older driver as they are usually more honest and kind hearted. Either agree on a price before, or tell them to use the meter.

    You won't find a cheap hotel there.
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the cheapest I found I payed 9000 GRD per night (for one person). In other regions of Greece you can find hotels for the half of that price!

    Kavos resort
  • Tip Rating:
  • Avoid the Kavos resort. This is the southernmost point of the island. We went there because of the Cap Asprokavos - very nice place with the ruins of a monastery. But we had to pass through the resort - I believe the ugliest place in the island! Crowded of sunburned tourists, bars, English pubs, tourist shops, even the cinema was there! Nothing to do with the original atmosphere of a Greek island.

    A canal keeps the old fortress...
  • Tip Rating:
  • A canal keeps the old fortress away from the mainland making the fortress placed on an small island. The canal is 15 meter deep and 30 meter wide. Don't fall into it! =)

    If a driver coming opposite...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If a driver coming opposite you in a narrow street flashes his lights it DOESN'T mean he's going to give you way - it means he's coming first! BEWARE!
