    Ancient and modern Sparta
    by Lilasel
Laconia's ancient history is the history of Sparta (the capital of the prefecture of Laconia, 225 km from Athens). The city of the Evrotas river valley, between the Taygetos and Parnonas mountain ranges, was the first known totalitarian, slave-based society in history. Sparta owes its fame to its long-standing feud with Athens that led to the Peloponesian War and to the eventual demise of both city-states.

Elafonisos island is a fabulous spot for superb vacation. It is linked with the Peloponnesos by ferry (5 minutes) or "Kaikia" (skiffs).
Simos (one of the country's most stunning beaches) will amaze you. A 1.5 kilometer long beach stretches below sand dunes and cedar trees. To reach it you should sail round half the island by boat or walk five kilometres from Elafonisos residential district. Local tavernas serve fresh fish.

Following the road from Sparta which passes through plane trees, cypresses, olive trees, mulberries and orange trees we reach Mystras (5 km on the West side of Sparta).

Mystras was the hometown of Byzantium's last emperor, Constantine 11th Paleologos Dragatis, and fell to the Turks three years after the fall of Vasilevoussa ("the reigning city"), as Constantinople was known then.

Mystras, during the last years of the Byzantine Empire had become the cultural center of the Empire, and its monasteries held precious collections of ancient texts.

One of the highlights of Laconia is Monemvasia (95 km form the town of Sparta), on the region's northeastern shore.
The name means single ("mone") entrance ("emvassia") and that is what defines Monemvasia.
A small island, known as the "Gibraltar of Greece", resembling a gigantic boulder stuck 400 meters off the shore, it is linked to the mainland with a narrow walkway.

Today, it is one of the best preserved medieval sites in the whole country and it attracts thousands of visitors every year who flock here to witness its haunting beauty.

More information and pictures about this magical place is on my Monemvasia page

  • The statue of Leonidas - Prefecture of Laconia
    The statue of Leonidas
    by Lilasel
Sparta was considered the greatest military power of antiquity.

All men of Spartan birth had to serve in the army. Boys of seven were taken from their families to live in army barracks. Their whole lives were dedicated to learning the arts of war.

The soldier trainees were beaten, made to sleep on the ground, fed terrible food, encouraged to speak as little as possible, and engaged in military maneuvres all day long. Their graduation requirements included hunting down and killing a slave without being detected. Their motto was "E tan e epi tas" ("either under it or on it"), meaning that they would return from battle either under their shield (alive) or on it (dead), but never without it (as deserters).

A combination of rocky soil and no rain makes it a very arid region. A region as fierce and rugged as the Mani requires an aggressive, hardened soul. The people of this region have been given the reputation of harden survivors who are rough on the edges. Though not true, there is some truth behind this image.
The people of Mani are said to be descendents of the original Spartans. As some settled in Mystra and others gave into the rule of invading forces, it is said that these people chose to live in this rugged landscape instead of being taken over. And these people are proud of the fact that no foreign power has ever ruled over this region.EVER!

During your excursions around Mani, you will arrive to the southernmost point of the peninsula, which happens to be the southernmost of Europe mainland. It is cape Tenaro or cavo Matapas where it is supposed to be the gate of Hades.
The ancient Greeks believed that a deceased was carried by the god Hermes (Mercury) to the water and then he/she was escorted by Charon, the ferryman, across an underground lake or river to their last resting place in Hades. He received as payment an "Obolos" coin which the family usually placed in the mouth of the dead to ensure their safe passage to the underworld. Without the Obolos, Charon would refuse passage and the soul would be doomed to wander in the world of the living forever. Such beliefs guided ancient Greeks to build sanctuaries and Nekromanteia in places where they believed passages to the underworld existed. The sanctuary of Poseidon in Cape Tenaro, it is also identified as an important shrine of the Dead.

The beautiful lighthouse in the end of the cape seems to gaze at the ocean warning and protecting the sailors, not to come near the Hades gate!

The Mediterranean area produces 99% of the world olive oil production.
Greece, despite the fact that it is a small country in magnitude, stands in the 3rd position in the world in the olive oil production, after Spain and Italy.
There are today approximately 120,000,000 olive trees in Greece (the population of the country is approximately 10,000,000).
Greece is the biggest exporter of Extra Pure Olive Oil considered the best quality of olive oil.
Biological cultivation of the olive tree in Greece started approximately 10 years ago in Mani and it is estimated that today it uses 15,000 stremmata while it is expected to exceed 35,000 stremmata in the next years.
There is an Olive and Greek Olive Oil Museum in Sparta, Laconia . The aim of the museum is the promotion of the olive culture and providing information about its cultivation in the area of the Peloponnese as well as all over Greece and the wider Mediterranean area.
Don't forget to buy some pure virgin olive oil from Laconia area. I think that there is not exist better quality .

The first time I visited a village tavern in Mani and I ordered a greek salad, I saw in horror the tomato, cacuber, onion and pepper pieces, "swimming" in an olive oil sea!!!
After the first shock, I discovered that the tomato's juice, when it is mixed with olive oil, produces a delicious sauce, that can be eaten using bread or drunk directly from the plate!!!
From the moment I met this delicatessen, I lost my good manners eeehh???? :)

    Towerhouses in Mani
    by marka13
There are about 800 towers, isolated or grouped in villages, the oldest go back to the 15th c, their height increased with the power of the family that built them. They were constructed of irregularly shaped blocks of stone, about 15m-25m/50ft-80ft high and square in shape, they comprised three or four rooms one above the other, linked by ladders and trap doors. Windows were small and few in number and the top floor was crenellated so that tower looked like a castle keep. The greatest concentration of towers is to be found in Kita and Vathia in the south.

When you enter Vathia village, and you walk around the narrow alleys, among the towers, you still feel the wildness. Some of the towers are ruined and neglected and you can enter inside to see the interior architecture. But more than this you can stay in one of them as they have been turned to guesthouses. In Areopolis or Vathia, or Gerolimenas you can find some of them.
