Follow the steps from the main square of the vilage and go to the top of the castle. The scenery there, is in absolute contrast with the rocky vilage. A "sea" of trees and grass and a number of 366 old byzantine churches (mostly remainings of them), are spread around the area. try to make it there during sunset, great colors for an ultra panoramic view.

Agia Sophia (church of Holy Wisdom) is one of the best byzantine churches that can be found all over Greece. It is octagonal and its wall-paintings have been restored. It was built by the Byzantine emperor Andronikos B' between 1287-1328.
If you want to go inside it, find the secret on the excellent page about Monemvasia of VT member dimitris03...

It is located at the same edge of the town. It was built in the 17th century, still in use.
The yard around the church towards the walls is the only open, somehow, place of Monemvasia, even though not large. I had seen there kids playing football (and I was jealous, of course!).

The buildings of Monemvasia are a mixture of wonderful houses -both old and "new"- and ruined byzantine churches. Even the few pensions have the same architectural style.
The lower town is inhabited today, many of the ruined buildings keep on being restored.

The cemetery of this historical place exists as long as you pass by the bridge which
connects Nea Monemvasia and the lower town of Monemvasia, about 150 m before the entrance.
There, you can see the grave of Yannis Ritsos (1909-1990), one of the most widely translated Greek poets - and a favorite of mine too. He was born in Monemvasia, he is also the uncle of one of my best friends!

The famous Greek poet was concerned with classical themes, but he also had a more personal lyricism and style, using simple words in deep thoughts.
The music of Mikis Theodorakis on his long poem "Epitafios" in 1960 was the detonator of the cultural revolution in Greece.
Ritsos was a communist. He was sentenced to spend 4 years in various camps (basicly in Makronisos) during the greek civil war (1945-1949). Between 1967-1971 the military dictatorship exiled him in different islands (as in Yaros).
He died in Athens in 1990 but his poems stayed for ever immortal...

You can also find enough places to sleep (cheaper choices than the traditional pensions of Monemvasia) and tavernas to eat in Nea Monemvasia...
Going back there after visiting the mediaeval upper and lower town looks like a return to modern "civilization"... but everyone prefers the "original" Monemvasia.

What I enjoy most when in Monamvasia, is having a coffee with a piece of cake or something similar. Nothing better than sipping your coffee or drink in the Greek way: the longest it takes, the better it tastes ;-)

Built by the Byzantine Emperor Andronicus II Comnenus in 1293, this great vaulted church is the largest medieval church in southern Greece. Dedicated to Christ in Chains, unusually it was allowed to function as a Christian place of worship following the occupation by the Turks in 1540. It is the largest and most dominant building in the Lower Town.

"He said: I believe in poetry,
    in love, in death,
    that's exactly why I believe
    in immortality.
    I write a stich,
    I write the world.
    I exist, the world exists.

The sky is seven times azure.
    This clearness is again
    the first truth.
    My last wisdom".
