Don't Miss VITINA - so Traditional!

by greekcypriot

Vitina is just 44 km from Tripoli, and a very popular destination. It is indeed a Traditional little village that keeps its colour and style. So elegant indeed!Walk in its streets and see the beautiful shops selling all sorts of Greek products. Each shop is unique and elegant…They sell all kinds of Greek herbs, home-made delicacies, desserts, spice, liqueur, and pastry. It is full of nice stone-built tavernas and if it is summer make a stop here for lunch. You will just love it!Tip: Have a look on my video in Vitina.

Don't Miss Monemvasia's Castle!

by greekcypriot

It is so idylic walking in the narrow alleys in Monemvasia - the old city, but try going up the hill.It is so romantic and from up there the view is awesome!Rest at a nice cafe, and buy one or two souvenirs from the beautiful and so discreet shops.

Barbarian Invasions in the Old Monemvasia!

by greekcypriot

Barbarian invasions forced the Lacedemonians of the surrounding area to seek refuge in the natural fortress of the rock of Monemvasia and this is how it made its first apprearance in history, in the 6th century.Byzantines, Francs, Venetians, Turks and modern Greeks were at different times masters of the unconquerable castle which is considered a monument to the art of fortress construction of the middle ages.

The Old Town of Monemvasia

by greekcypriot

Some Information before visiting this place here:Monemvasia means entry, (Moni= single Emvasia= entry), a place that has a single entrance. A peninsula, used as a port by some Cretans who gave it its first name, "AKRA MINOA" and which was separated from the mainland during the great earthquake of 375A.D.See the photo of the entrance to the old town - the Castle gate.

Visit AREOPOLI

by greekcypriot

Areopoli is named after Ares, the Greek God of war. It has a population of one thousand inhabitants, and it is distinguished by its landscape and architectural style. It is a traditional town in Mani.We walked through the narrow alleys, but most of the village here is desserted. It gave me the impression that not many people stay here, but it is something very different, something unique that visitors should come here and walk through the whole village. Believe me, - it is worth it!Be sure to have your cameras along.

The Stalactites of Diros

by greekcypriot

More information about Diros that I believe it is a Must visit. No matter how many times you visit it you just want to come back again. The tour with the boat lasts about 25 minutes and has a total length of 1.500 metres. When the boat ride comes to an end, you would feel that you want to have another one.Working Hours:From 08:30 to 15:00 from October to May and until 17:30 from June until September. The boat trip costs 12 euro, and 6euro for people who are over 60.Of course there is another price for students and groups.Coming here:The distance from Athens is approximately 300 km.

Paralia Kiparissi

by nickandchris

This was the most amazing journey!! The (washed out in places) road clung to the cliffs with sheer drops on unguarded edges down to the sea, very nerve-racking. We really thought we had taken a wrong turn but realised the bus had come past us. Finally the road surface returned but the approach to Kiparissi was very steep and narrow. It is a very picturesque place when you finally reach it. A couple of kafeneons (closed ) and tavernas and supposedly some accommodation which we didn't find. There is a nice looking beach to the north above which are a few buildings. It is one of the stopping off places for the hydrofoils. What a life-line it must be in this out-of-the-way place.2007 UPDATE: THE FLYING DOLPHIN SERVICE NO LONGER OPERATES IN THESE WATERS, LEAVING THESE SMALL EAST COAST PORTS VERY ISOLATED.

Limni Gerakas

by nickandchris

Limni Gerakas is on the eastern prong of Laconia. When we stayed, the first few kms of the road were fine but then it turned into an atrocious dirt track, 19kms. of it. When you approach Gerakas it appears to be landlocked but it is a shallow, swampy bay that you follow until you reach the village. It has an island feel to it.It's very attractive with a few harbour tavernas and a panto. The Flying Dolphin calls here. A good job as it takes so long to get here by road!!Also caters for the sailing lot. Prices reflect this or maybe it's just the remoteness of the place.2007 UPDATE; THYE FLYING DOLPHIN SERVICE NO LONGER OPERATES IN THESE WATERS, LEAVING THESE SMALL EAST COAST PORTS VERY ISOLATED.

Kamares beach

by nickandchris

This is a couple of beaches in a deep bay. There is a little chapel at one end. The water was absolutely freezing and went deep very quickly. The road past the Belle Helene Hotel from Ageranos becomes narrow and rough concrete (or it did all those years ago!) There was a little kafeneon above the bay with wonderful views.
