My mom and I went to Agios Nikolaos for some food and relaxation. She had been to Ag.Nik three times before, but never to this resturant. It opened only last year and has yet to build the reputation it so well deserves.

We were directed to GOLD by the people at the well known restaurant La Strada, just a few steps away. They gave us a voucher for a free glass of vine, and we didn't hesitate. At GOLD we were very well recieved, so we decided to dine there the next evening.

So we did, and had one of the finest meals ever. I had the fresh Sea Bream with three kinds of sauses. My favourite was the ginger sause. Delicious! Mom had some very good lamb chops. We shared a salad with a gorgeous parmesan shell. A feast for the eye, as well as the mouth.

Later in the week we made a second visit to GOLD. I couldn't resist having the Sea Bream again, with some nice macedonian wine. Mom also had the Sea Bream this time. Both times we were treated to a little something to drink, on the house, after dinner.

The service was flawless on both occations. Everyone on the staff was very nice. GOLD really deserves more recognition and we wish that more people discover this great restaurant.

Go for GOLD. You won't regret it!

Favorite Dish: Fresh Sea Bream, that I had both evenings, with the ginger sause expecially.

NEON: the best view in town (Agios Nikolaos)

Neon is the place with the best view in town. You sit in a beautiful garden-restaurant directly above the famous lake of Agios Nikolaos. Where else can you see lake and sea from one view? The friendly greek owner is an artist, which you can feel in the athmosphere of the whole place. We had a great English waiter with that typically english humor. I can only recommand,- if your in Agios Nikolaos,- don't miss NEON.

Favorite Dish: The food was exellent. I had a greek salad, then a fish-dish with rice and a wonderful greek desert for very, very little money.

La Strada - agios Nicolaos: Not so good

Hello,
We were on holiday in Agios Nicolaos and we went for dinner to La Strada - Italian Restaurant.
We ordered for a starter carparccio. They gave us a plate with (cheap) smoked beef!! floating in olive-oil with a few tiny pieces of parmezancheese and two leaves of rocketsalat!! And they clame that they are a real Italian restaurant. Shame on you!!! They also added a tip on the bill. i will be the judge wether a give a tip or not.
This restaurant thinks that all tourists are fouls when it comes to food.

And when you complain about it they donot handle it very well.

Save your mony and go to a real greek restaurant for Mezedakia. The place to be is Hrisofillis.
The food is very, very good.

A real chef.

A real chef

Favorite Dish: Nothing, after the starter we left!!!

Okeanos Fish Restaurant, Ayios Nicolaos in Crete

We had a very satisfying dinner at the Okeanos restaurant. The seafood was fresh and excellently prepared and the service polite. It has a great location write by the Limni or Lagoon with seating both by the water and inside. We took a table by the balcony in the building and enjoyed the lovely view together with our meal.

Favorite Dish: The grilled octopus was excellent. Grilled to perfection was neither too soft not chewy. Drizzled with olive oil, it really was one of the best I have ever had.

"Newly Opened"??

Cafes By The Lagoon, Agios Nikolaos

The owner of this place (I don't remember it's name, but it's the first one around the main loop of the lagoon) talked us in with his charm and patter. He had just opened up, it was a new place, we would be his first customers... And he had lots of stuff for vegetarians, including veg moussaka. After we ordered we found there was no veg moussaka after all, "mistake in the kitchen". So we would have something else... The service was slow but the food (whatever it was we had) was OK, I certainly don't remember it being bad. Maybe they had just opened up, and the slow service and "mistake in the kitchen" was teething troubles. Who knows.

Favorite Dish: Not the veg moussaka, that's for sure.

This was my stand-out meal of our stay in Agios Nikolaos. We ate at this place twice too, our first meal in Ak Nick (lunch the day we arrived) and our last meal there too (if you exclude breakfast at Eoliko on the morning we left). The owner was all you hope a Greek host would be. He talked us through various things that he had to offer, most especially the things that were not "run of the mill" and recommended us a very splendid wine, which was one of the best we'd had in Greece. And no, I can't remember what it was.

Favorite Dish: The best "giant beans" of the trip, maybe ever.
"Country Greens" - yes, cabbage, broccoli and kale cooked Greek style.
Fried aubergine
Stuffed peppers
"Village bread" - like bread only much nicer!
I'm sure there was more. I'm sure there was something to do with potatos, maybe a potato stew thing.
It was all very, very good and in a lovely spot on the edge of the lagoon.

Ofou To Lo: Veggie Souvalaki

Ofou To Lo, Agios Nikolaos

We ate here twice too. The first time we ate here we just had pretty standard fare - pizza and pasta I think - not even Greek. It was nice enough though, and it's right by the sea and a very pleasant location for a spring evening's meal. The owner (or waiter - it's hard to tell at a lot of these places) was very friendly and chatty and mentioned that he could do for us something special - veggie souvalaki (souvalaki is a Greek kebab of skewered meats) should we come again. So that's what we did, and it was really lovely. It was wifes most stand-out meal of the holiday - helped by this friendly waiter/owner who always stopped to chat with us whenever we were passing on our days out too.

Favorite Dish: Veggie Souvalaki

La Strada: The Greek Italian

La Strada, Agios Nikolaos

So good we ate here twice. The place specialises in both Greek and Italian food and has shuttered frontage that is opened up when the weather is good. The first time we ate there it was closed up, so we were indoors. The second time it was opened up so, even though we were at the same table, we were outdoors. Food and wine here was lovely - or else we wouldn't have gone back!

Favorite Dish: Not sure, again, time fades the memory. I think that I had risotto at least one of the times and wife probably had some sort of past dish. All I really remember is that it was all really lovely and the staff were friendly and efficient too.

Cretan Embassy: Ambassador's Choice?

Cretan Embassy, Agios Nikolaos

The Cretan Embassy is another very colourful place. It would be lovely to dine outside in its garden but we couldn't the day that we went as the owner was experiencing staff shortages and she couldn't cover outside as well as in. So inside it was that we ate. I believe that the building had indeed served as some sort of consulate in its past.

Favorite Dish: We had something that was not quite a mezze - it consisted of a variety of more substantial dishes than a mezze does, each being more akin to a small portion of a main course. I don't remember everything that we had but it did consist of veggie moussaka, stuffed peppers & tomatoes and some sort of potato dish. Time fades the memory.

Pelagos is a well known and much reported upon taverna in Ag. Nick. The building and garden are very colourful and in the fading sun of a spring evening they look even more lovely. Famous for its seafood it is also quite good for mezze, though not the most outstanding mezze that we ever had.
