It's very easy to get to Lefkada.
Just take the plane and fly to "Aktio" airport. The city of Lefkada, is at the north of the island, approximately 20' by car or bus away from the airport.
The island is connected to the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge, as well as the island's capital city.

There is no airport on Lefkas. You fly to Aktion, 26km. south and then bus it to Lefkas. Only charters from England May to October. Schedules from Athens several times a week.

great sights of the interior of Paros...

Suggest very strongly that you save your visit until you have use of a private vehicle. There just isn't enough to keep you interested for the four hours between pick-up times.

Expect a crowded and noisy bus filled with beach going youngsters, both going and coming.

Lefkes has no public transportation within the village itself. Poor signage, steep inclines, and a town that follows the curvature of the surrounding hillside, make for a difficult stroll for the infirm.

Your thigh muscles will scream at you as the trek progresses, and we didn't find too many opportunities to sit and rest, either on benches or local bars.

However, we did find a lovely little park, with a great view of the countryside, complete with benches. Believe it was located within the village centre (as such).

Boat Excursion

Summer excursion boats connect Nidri and Vassiliki to Sami, Fiskardo and Poros on Kefalonia and Kioni (Ithaca). These services are always being amended, so check first.
Daily boat from Nidri to Meganisi.
Ferries leave Vassiliki for Kefalonia and Ithaca once or twice a day.

Boat excursions to Porto Katsiki and other innaccessible beaches from Vassiliki, weather permitting.

Michael in his car.....

We cannot stay in resort without hiring a car. We hired a strange purple thing from Nick, the proprietor of Lighthouse Restaurant in Vassiliki. It may not have been new but the only thing that went wrong were the wipers which Nick managed to fix with a pair of pliers.
Michael used to sit for hours steering the stationary car while we sat and had a drink. Greek granny would always give him a chocolate wafer bar so the steering wheel ended up horribly sticky. She also used to haul him out from his enjoyment to give him a cuddle!!!.

Restraining Michael

How do I get out??

In 1988 children's car seats seemed to be unheard of so we had to improvise. We used a baby back- carrier strapped into the back of the vehicle. It did keep him restrained but I don't think it was overly comfortable for him. Still, he wasn't one for complaining (and still isn't at 18).

Taxi

There are plenty of taxi's to be found on the harbour front in Nidri and they are an inexpensive way of getting around Lefkas. All taxi's are modern and air conditioned. They hold a maximum of four people and that is including children. For those of you needing transport from Preveza Airport it is best to book in advance. A taxi from the airport to Nidri will cost you around €57. Another thing to remember is child seats are not a legal requirement in Greece and so therefore are not provided.
