  • A must!

    Lefkas Restaurants

The Nidri Harbour is crowded with restaurants, and many of them look more or less alike. But one of them is really a must to visit; El Greco. We've been to Lefkas/Nidri several times and have got to know both the most friendly and smiling staff in Nidri, and their delicious food. It's a greek and italian kitchen, and they have very reasonable...

I have just got back from a two week holiday in Nidri in Lefkas and spent my evenings at the Devine Bar, this is an english bar which is based opposite the Athos Hotel. I found the bar to be fantastic and very family friendly. The owners are both English and all the locals in the bar are always willing to have a chat and let you know about the...

  • Nice smelling streets, neat houses

    Lefkas Island Things to Do

It was a pleasure to walk the streets of the city. I have discovered the nice smell of flowers in the gardens, the smell of olive oil coming maybe from the cellars, the kitchens and I suppose also from wood of houses treated with olive oil against the water damage. Some of the houses also had units with perfume that was sprayed in the air. Fun!

  • Daily cruises from Nydri

    Lefkas Island Tourist Traps

At the port of Nydri, there are three companies that offer daily cruises to Porto Katsiki or Egremni beach, Fiskardo on Kefallonia island, Kioni on Ithaki island, Papanikolis cave on Meganisi island and Skorpios, the island of Aristotelis Onassis, the famous Greek shipping tycoon. This sounds really grate – so thought I, too – BUT keep in mind that...

  • Wind Surfing

    Vasiliki Things to Do

Vasiliki is famous for windsurfing, and there are plenty of accommodations for you to try windsurfing while on Lefkada. At least three companies offer rentals and lessons for you to try your hand at windsurfing, with resorts right on the beach geared around windsurfing vacations, with three sessions a day. If memory serves correct, an hour lesson,...

  • Lefkas, Ormos Sivota at night

    Vasiliki Nightlife

At night, in 1977, the only lights were at the restaurant (the only one!) and city lights from the restaurant to the end of the road, at the bottom of the bay. In 2001, I have not taken the photo, but the whole bay was light by the many restaurants all along the quay.

  • Lefkas, Ormos Sivota, alien boat

    Vasiliki Off The Beaten Path

The boat shown on this photo is obviously not a local boat. It was anchored with nobody on board. Boats with side lee-boards, used as rudder, are found in the Netherlands. If it actually came from the Netherlans, it had to sail a long way as well through canals and rivers than on the sea.

  • Port Athéni, west cove

    Nisida Meganisi Things to Do

At the bottom of the west cove, a small olive trees orchard spreads at the lowest part of the valley. There is no actual quay but a few local small boats are moored along the shore (first photo). The second photo shows one of our friends sailing out of Port Athéni with the mountains of Lefkas island in the background. • Port Athéni, east cove

    Nisida Meganisi Things to Do

Port Atheni is a nice cove, 11/2 nautical miles east of Port Vathi. After we left Vathi, we anchored there on the west side of the cove for a swim and a Greek salad dinner on board. The village on top of the hill must be Spartohori, the main village of the island.

  • What else than sea food!

    Nisos Kalamos Restaurants

Last time we visited Porto Leone, it was still completly uninhabited. However, I have read that a small restaurant had now opened in one of the houses. This is very recent as it should have opened in summer 2007 but I have not checked if this is true and hence have no idea about the quality and the price of the meals.

  • Too large for the quay !

    Nisos Kalamos Things to Do

The water is very shallow along the small quay and only small yachts like ours, with a draught less than 1 meter can moor. Larger yachts, like the one shown on this series of photos have to remain in the middle of the bay. It stayed anchored only in the afternoon: their passengers obviously needed a restaurant in the evening and none was available...

  • Olive press in Porto Leone

    Nisos Kalamos Things to Do

A little further in the basement, left to the small boat, there was a heavily rusted press. As it was close to the oil mill, it must have been used to press out of the crushed olives any oil that would have been left by the mill. However, the device to put together the crushed olives and collect the oil was missing.

  • Black-striped pipefish

    Kalamos Off The Beaten Path

Black-striped pipefish is Syngnathus abaster and is an amazing snake like fish, the size of a little finger and 10-15 cm long. I was lucky to spot this one and succeeded in taking several shots. Sorry, some are not very sharp but I felt it was interesting to show this rather unusual fish.

  • A school of small fishes

    Kalamos Off The Beaten Path

I am unable to give the scientific name of these small fishes but what I know is that they would have made an excellent dish once fried! Fried fishes are called Γαρσοσ in Greek. When they are whole small fishes, the name is μαριδα but these very small one would be named...

  • Mussels and urchins

    Kalamos Off The Beaten Path

As well as starfishes, urchins are Echinoderms with a radial symmetry. They feed mostly on algae but eat also mussels. The ones I photographed here are amidst mussels, so it is very likely that they were looking for a prey!

  • Wind mill

    Nisida Kastos Things to Do

On the slopes that dominate the village, at Kalikerimi there is an olive grove with very old olive trees. They have thick trunks and must be several hundred years old. On top of the mountain range, a wind mill is still standing with its corrugated iron roof. It has lost its wings. We decided to climb to the mill. The path was almost erased and...

  • Water cistern

    Nisida Kastos Things to Do

Water is scarce on the island. There are no springs on the island and until recently, water had to be brought from the continent. Thus rain water collection and storage was a need. On the picture, the concrete roof is concave. Rain water is collected and kept in the cistern. In the middle of the picture, what looks like a well is actually the place...
