The church of Panaghia at the centre of the village.
The Festival of Panaghia (Virgin Mary) on August 15th is one of the best known all over Greece. Starting date is the 14th of August. So, if fate should bring you to the island on the eve of the religious feast, try participating in the local customs. Pilgrims arrive in Ayiassos by all means of transport. Indeed, many people arrive from Mytilini or other villages on foot, enjoying the beautiful nights of August along the way.
If you climb up on the bell-tower of the church, you will have an impressive view of the surrounding forested mountains.
