Do visit the village of Petra, here you will find a lovely little church, built on the top of a great rock in the middle of the village. There are approx 140 steps to the church, quite a climb, but so worth it for the views. It's also a pretty little church inside. Don't forget to take something to slip round your shoulders ladies, and no short...

OK,the food is quite simple.Maybe it is the sea aura, the fresh ingredients or the distinguished Lesbian ouzo(at least 12-14 brands, one should find one's favorite) that makes it so tasteful.First you ask for some starters (there is a great choise for them),either chosen by you or leave the waiter bring a different one every time you ask for a new...

Many people overlook To Xani because it is the first 'eating house' you come to as you walk up the main agora. This is a mistake. The food that we have had has always been good and the prices are excellent. Both of the waiters are called Manolis so it is easy to be on first name terms. Manolis and Manolis are very friendly and will help you order...

  • Easiest way to get to Lesvos is...

Lesvos is 1,5 hour to Ayvalik in Turkey. Ayvalik is also such a beautiful place, similar to Lesvos. There are daily boat trips to/from Lesvos and Ayvalik. Many people living in Lesvos comes to Ayvalik for shopping. If you are in Lesvos, give one day to visit Ayvalik and Cunda (a small historical town in Ayvalik)

Some of my observations about transport in Lesvos.------1. Generally about driving around90% of Lesvos is mountainous, roads go up- and downhill, it's difficult to find some straight section, turnings are main elements of every road. The road system is not bad but also not very good. There are no express roads with 2-3 lanes but on some roads the...

Five generations of distilling guarantees the success of this company who was tranferred at Plomari during 1860. The Barbayannis family has faithfully preserved the 140-year-old ouzo tradition, following in the footsteps of Efstathios Barbayannis. The family carefully selects high quality, natural ingredients for its ouzo and pays special attention...

Also, in the capital Mytilini, you can visit an ouzo distillery. It is located just by the harbour, where the big boats anchor. Walk towards the statue by the bathing place,...

If you visit Plomari, be sure to check the Museum of Ouzo. Be sure to taste other good ouzo too, like Pitsiladi, Giannatsi and Dimino.

Lesvos Warnings and Dangers

  • Urchins

The local shops in Molyvos stock swimming shoes and if you venture into the see there you will need them. On my husbands first swim his foot brushed against the top of an urchin - it's very painful and it's difficult to remove the spines. The shoes are well worth it.

  • When it rains......

We visited Molyvos in June and the weather for the majority of the two weeks was gorgeous. There was one day when a storm came over the island and there was a downpour. As Molyvos is a built upon hill the rain water drains down and it created quite a little river outside our hotel!

  • Lesvos - Watch Out Drinking Cold Drinks!

Especially when the August wind blows, a cold drink can easily help you to catch a cold. So always bring a sweater or coat. It's not that bad if you accidentally drink a bit. But it is just a...

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We read in the guide book tha the village of Agiassos was supposedly this genuine and picturesque little mountain village. Obviously others had read that too, and local commerce had learn to take advantage. What we found was actually more of a souvenir paradise, than anything unspoilt. Dissappointing to say the least!

Fun Alternatives: Any of all the other villages, unless of course, you want to go souvenir shopping..!

    So much geniune stuff...!

Lesvos What to Pack

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: In summer it's very hot during the day, but sometimes can be a bit chilly in the evenings. Take some walking shoes - the roads can be a bit dusty and if you want to go to the top of the rock to see the church, or to visit Molivos, there's some climbing to be done!

At the end of our holiday it's always sad to arrive at the airport.
