Many shops: Absolutely Everything!
We love the shops in Greece and Lesvos was no disappointment. Those that we prefer are oddly, the food shops, bakers, butchers, green grocers. etc. I know when we go into an artopoleon or zaxari we can spend ages deciding what to buy, everything looks so tempting!! (especially the pies, for me.)
If you like your tourist shops then Molyvos and Petra are a sheer delight. I suspect what you can't buy in either of these places isn't worth having anyway. I liked the array of greek slippers in one of the photos here. in Molyvos, there are some traditional shops, selling locally produced food items as well as craft products. The Women's Co-operative have a large chunk of the business in Molyvos and Petra, with shops and restaurants selling high quality food and non- food delights.
Sales vans are still very much in evidence on the island and shout their wares over a megaphone.
In Molyvos, Anaxos and Petra, there are several small supermarkets that sell most of your holiday requirements, as well as the smaller, more specific shops. For those who like to do a "big shop" as we do, and have a car, then Kalloni has a few larger supermarkets, including the Atlantik, heading out towards Arisivi. Although prices may be cheaper and choice much greater, service in this particular supermarket is apalling, with the young check-out girls too busy gossiping to concentrate on what they should be doing, scanning items through the till. There is also the strange and annoying system of returning empty bottles via "the office", a seperate desk where a slow witted person adds up the deposits and hand writes a chit you then give to the check-out girl. Maddeningly slow. You have been warned. Oh, and the trolly park is on a slope so when you take/return a trolley, it will run away from you and be extremely difficult to manouvre!!
What to buy: Lesvos is a big ouzo producer, as well as olive oil and soap.
I tried the mytiline olives and they were better than many I have tried, having a firm texture and none too salty.Related to:
