But the best is to be at a "tsipouradiko" in Volos, where you must try tsipouro, a strong drink... Leave a Comment Theme: Other

A wonderful restaurant, very swish inside and clean, with central heating and carpets, serving superb food and wine at a very good price. Apparently it is/was run by the Apple Growers Co-operative. A large outdoor area fronting onto the beach, (ideal for bored children!) with superior awning coverage. Were always given free anchovies and a tsiporo on arrival and free Zagora apples to end our meal. Extremely busy at weekends.
We enjoyed everything we had, tiropitas, gigantes, keftedes, etc. The prices were as cheap as anywhere we had eaten in a top class restaurant at that! We stopped off in Milina sometimes for a drink. There are quite a lot of places to choose from, we just chose somewhere that didn't look too posh or trendy cafe/bar like.
Only had drinks here. There appeared to be the usual menu of cooked and grilled items. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalAddress: Milina, PilionDirections: On Milina's waterfront, towards the southern end. Near a gift shop and mini-market.

We didn't actually eat here, only stopped for drinks on a couple of occasions. An interesting building with a thatched roof which leaked in various places when it rained. We got talking to the owner who had spent some time in America, in lots of different places. He had of course come back to retire and was originally from Olympus. He told us tourism in Lefokastron was 50/50 Greeks and foreigners. He didn't appear to be too happy the day it was raining, Could have been because an official was going through his finances!! (or something similar). On the rainy day, we met a little kitty here who was so friendly.
Beer was 2 euros. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalAddress: Lefokastron, PilionDirections: When you enter the village from the main road, turn right and Olympic is just along the seafront road, on the right..

Run by a lovely, quietly spoken Greek, Martha. Very friendly. Beautiful interior (where we ate when it rained!) with a variety of interesting "collections" and pictures. Seating outdoors by the beach and also over the road, outside the restaurant (more sheltered.) Were given free puddings on numerous occasions.
The spetsofai was superb here, coming in a clay pot and full of peppers as well as aubergine. Philip enjoyed the cheese croquettes which came with a hot cheese dip. Local wine, very good quality red at 6 euros a kilo. Spetsofai: 5.50 euros. Stiffado: 6.50 euros. Leave a Comment

A marvellous eating place with very friendly young men welcoming us. Our first visit here we only had a drink but we promised we would be back for a meal. We chose a Sunday and it was throbbing with very loud, huge appetited Greeks who never stopped eating the whole time we were there (and they were there before us!) No written menu but we had a choice of the usual fish and meat as well as lamb slow baked in the oven with roast potatoes, (absolutely delicious) and Philip had bifteki smothered in cheese, baked in the oven which he demolished.
The lamb was beautifully tender and I think was a leg steak. It fell away from the bone and the potatoes were nice instead of chips. Wine a kilo: 4euros Lamb: 6 euros Bifteki: 5 euros An absolutely fantastic place, set just above the little beach of Katigiorgis. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Katigiorgis, MagnesiaDirections: When you hit the beach, turn right and ignore the first large place,(I think a hotel taverna) and walk up the narrow street and this place is next to the mini-market, with seating looking over the beach.

Kostas was another place we frequented. The choice here was enormous for the beginning of the season and it was slightly cheaper than other places. Run by a Greek/Singapore couple and their family it was a popular spot some nights and others it was almost deserted. Delicious home cooking and excellent wine. Some people with Kosmar had been here the year before and had noted in the menu you could pre-order an Asian curry. They ordered one this year and seemed to be eating all evening! We decided we didn't want to be eating curries when in Greece; there was so much choice already.
Here I experienced Imam for the first time. It is a delicious concoction of aubergine stuffed with onions and peppers and was melt in the mouth stuff. I am not even a vegetarian and most definitely love meat. I just love the Greek vegetable dishes. Local wine: 4euros a kilo Imam : 4euros Fassolakia: 4euros Bolognese: 4.50 euros Leave a Comment

Situated on the seafront, where they supposedly close the road to traffic, this was probably the most Greek place, even though it did appear to be run by a Polish woman. She was obviously there for good as she was into her Greek music and dancing. A lovely atmosphere but not as big a choice of food as the other places. This is where the periptero owner and more of the village chit-chats would while away hours, waiting for custom.
We ate fassolakia and chicken, both excellent but no pork chops, only what was called pork steak which was like a spare-rib chop and not too brilliant. Wine a kilo: 5 euros Chicken 4.50euros Fassolakia: 3.50 euros Pork steak 4.50 euros Leave a Comment

This restaurant was in the next cove, a short, well lit walk on what was known as the secret path. It had lovely views over the bay for which you paid a little extra. The place seemed to be favored by the boating fraternity, from the huge English compex just outside Horton, and put us off a bit. Compared with other establishments, the menu seemed to be more limited.
Here we ate another vegetable mixture, this time green broad beans and artichoke with fennel. Very interesting. We also had an enormous portion of braised chicken which was excellent value at 4.50 euros. The drinks were more expensive and the wine was not very good. Also, the bread was a little stale which I find unacceptable. Wine 6euros a kilo Coke 1.50 euros Beer 2.50euros Vegs. 5 euros Chicken 4.50 euros Leave a Comment

Ag. Kyriaki is a delightful little port where boats call from Volos and sometimes the Sporades. There are a few places to eat and drink, we chose the first most obvious one with seating on a terrace looking to the sea. O Manolas was another one of those fantastic eating experiences where we were greeted by a young man who spoke excellent English. We presumed he had been at sea as he was familiar with Grangemouth and Liverpool. We watched the wash from a high-speed ferry hit the walls of the taverna terraces and splash onto the tables. Great fun!
Our lunch choice were two enormous portions of Saganaki served with fried bread and I chose the frozen squid, fresh being pretty expensive. The squid was wonderful, the batter so crisp and un-greasy, the best yet. and certainly the saganaki was wolfed down Squid: 7 euros Saganaki: 3.50 euros Wine: 5 euros. O Manolas is the first of the two on terraces.
