Since we are staying these days in the village of Agios Lavrentios we thought to visit the Monastery as well because it is considered one of the significant sights of the area. In fact, the road leading to it, starts right from the entrance of the village. It is the same road that leads to the Metropolis Youth Campsite which is almost attached to...

Well, the name given to this beautiful Café bar “Aeriko” in Greek has two meanings. It means ‘aerial’ from the sounds and winds, but also a fairy figure. Frequent snowfalls should not be a major concern for you if you think that the roads are cleared from snow by the local municipality authorities soon after the snowfall. • Portaria

I don't know whether it's the norm in the mountain villages of Pilion but we were charged well over the odds for a beer and coke in Portaria. We felt we had been "ripped off" and it put us off stopping in other villages.I suppose we are true Brits and didn't complain; it was just one of those things.

I don't know whether anyone else would call Makrinitsa a tourist trap but there is plenty of "tat" to buy. I can't imagine all these bottled fruits etc. were made in Makrinitsa. Watch what you pay. Come forearmed with prices from elsewhere.I may be completely wrong about this!! Buy where you know where a product has come from.

Oros Pilion What to Pack

    Nice cool picnic.

by nickandchris Written Jun 7, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Beach shoes for the water as on stony beaches there are urchins. Also makes entering the water easier.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Beach mats, instead of towels, as once your towel is full of salt, it will not dry properly.

Miscellaneous: A freezer bag with a couple of freezer blocks are very useful for keeping picnics and drinks cool for most of the day.
