The Windmill: The place to eat on Skiathos

The Windmill lit up at night
    4 more images

The Windmill is situated high above the main town of Skiathos with fantastic views over the town and harbour, you can also watch the flights coming in and landing at the airport. It is a very steep walk up to it but it does make you work up an appetite. As you will read on the webpage link below it is a restoration of one of the oldest buildings in Skiathos built in 1880 and was in regular use until 1946 and was converted into a house until it fell into decay. It was taken over by a lovely couple Pam and Jon Dance who with the help of local craftsman turned it into the restaurant it is today. It is advisable to book in advance especially if you are feeling romantic and require the Honeymoon Table. The food was lovely, not one of the cheapest restaurants we visited but for all the above reasons well worth the visit.

Don Quijote Tapas Restaurant: Tapas on a rooftop in Greece

by glamourprincess Written Jul 4, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    A well-made Mojito

This restaurant run by a Norwegian woman specializes in Spanish and Mediterraien tapas dishes. Located on a terrace on the roof of one of the buildings near the harbour in Skiathos town, this is another excellent restaurant with a nice view.
For two persons it is advisable to choose 5-6 different dishes. It is possible to order more food while eating. Lisbeth and her husband (who run the place) are adorable and professional, and will gladly advise you when choosing the different tapas dishes.

Favorite Dish: The potato-dishes were great. And they had the best pita bread I've ever tasted. The garlic shrimps are nice as well!
The chicken in garlic/wine/.. was not very interesting and the onion croquettes were okay.
Do try the Mojito!!! It is very very nice.. and the prices on drinks are low compared to other places on the island (which serve crappy drinks)

Main Street Cafe: Trendy place for drinks

by glamourprincess Written Jul 4, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    The bar

Main Street Cafe is a modern and classy decorated bar/cafe on the main street of Skiathos that serve small dishes such as baked potato and club sandwich. It is popular among tourists as well as locals. They have a DJ and in the evening, they pump up the music and people come there for a drink. They play chill-out music in the afternoon and house/funky house at night. They have the coolest bathroom on the island. It is also a great place for people-watching.

Favorite Dish: The drinks are excellent but quite expensive at 8 euros. The Mojito is a winner!
We shared a Main Street club sandwich, a new edition of the regular club sandwich -> cream cheese, sun-dried tomato, turkey.. with fries. It was quite good, but the french fries were soft (bad). We also shared a platter with finger-food, such as mozzarella sticks(yum) and fried mushrooms (weird)..the chicken wings were too spicy and burning hot.. Go there for drinks or maybe the club sandwich (I noticed the waitress eating a baked potato for lunch so that's probably a safe choice!)..

Maria's Pizza: Really cozy and cute Italian restaurant

by glamourprincess Written Jul 4, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One of the most popular restaurants at Skiathos. Sometimes there's a queue before the restaurant opens at night. You might have to wait for a while to get a table at this small and cozy place. What I liked the most is that it is situated in the narrow streets of town, creating an intimate and great atmosphere. The staff is sweet and polite, and the menus are all handwritten and decorated. Very cute.
They serve a really huge selection of different Italian dishes and the food is served in generous portions.

Favorite Dish: I shared a garlic bread as a starter, and it was huge, just like a calzone with two different cheeses (mozzarella inside and parmesan on top) and lots and lots of garlic. The ham/pineapple pizza is terrific, really great Italian pizza!

The Windmill Restaurant: Magnificent view and excellent food

by glamourprincess Written Jul 4, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Yummy chocolate fondue

Located on the top of a hill in Skiathos town, the view of this old windmill - now restaurant - is terrific. It is an excellent spot to watch the sunset. The restaurant is run by some English people and I think the chef is Danish. The place is well-known and very popular at Skiathos so it is advisable to book a table in advance. This is possible if you go down to the harbour (easier than crawling up the hill to the restaurant) and you will be approached by a young woman who hands out flyers. Tables are set at 7 PM and 9:30 PM. If you are lucky, the honeymoon balcony - the best spot on the restaurant - might be available.

The menu is varied and you can choose between different dishes containing fish, meat, chicken or vegetarian. They have a wide selection of wines and beers as well.
The staff is professional and the service is excellent.

Favorite Dish: I had Grilled Lamb Cutlets with Garlic Mash, and the Windmill jam of berries as a main course and it was delicious.. Yummy! And for the dessert I could not resist the Windmill Chocolate Fondue, lots of fresh fruits, cookies and marshmellows, and a lovely chocolate dip.

Mum, Jaime and Charles enjoying the food

A wide range of traditional dishes are served here. The staff make you feel as if you are a recently discovered distant relative and the children are made a huge fuss of.

Favorite Dish: There si no favourite here - everything is so good I wouldn't dare advise anything other than your own choice - come back again and again and decide for yourself!

    Portobello: Great atmosphere

by glamourprincess Written Jul 4, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant located on the Main Street in Skiathos town is noticable because of its wooden interior and lots of flowers and green plants decorating the dining area. Quite exotic. The open kitchen creates a great atmosphere and a safety as you can see what's going on in there..
The staff is greek and speak a little bit English. The menu is dominated by the local greek cuisine and meat dishes. They have a bar-area as well where football-matches are shown on a big screen, and they are famous for their ice-drinks (didn't get to try them unfortunately).

Favorite Dish: The grilled lamb cutlets are served with fried potato, and it's good and a generous portion, but it's very simple. You get the lamb and the potato and nothing else.. no salad, no vegetables..
    Simple, but good.

  • Eating and drinking in Skaithos town: Traditional Greek restaurants

    by David-M Written Oct 5, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are numerous restaurants in Skiathos town. Broadly they are located in the old port, the new port, the old town and an area known as Club Strip.

We were not so impressed with those on the waterside in the new port (typically more expensive and the food not as good). Those on the waterside in the old port were better value.

But mostly we ate in the old town. Dionyssus and Georges are good value, Asprolithos and Polycratis at the top of the main street are good. Amfiliki opposite the health centre has good food and a great view (but book a table in advance near the window).

Jimmy's bar at the old port is a good place for a early evening happy hour drink (in September it is very picturesque as the sun goes down) Similarly the bar on the tip of the 'island' separating the old and new ports.

The coffee house with the Illy sign overlooking new port serves the best coffee around

Mesostratos: Pretty taverna with wicked squid!

by savageangel Written Nov 24, 2004

    Mesostrasos

We went to many tavernas in Skiathos but this was our favourite. All the food was lovley the setting so pretty and the prices resonable. The thing I loved about this was that many of the other tavernas were geared soley towards tourist taste where as I felt this was more in keeping with the area.

Favorite Dish: The squid was HUGE and really tasty

    Mouria: Good Food Good Price

by wishyouwherehere Updated Apr 4, 2011

    My husband enjoying his food

The food was the best Greek food we ate on this holiday and the best value for money. The building itself is very old and you are sat in a courtyard which was good because people do not walk past you whilst you are eating.

Favorite Dish: Stama is a meat stew which as cheese on the top of it. It is similar to Beef Stifado. The Potato croquettes where also very good.
We found this very good because they served different things to what all the other restaurants served.

Having a Mythos by the sea

There are a lot of tavanas along the waterside in Skiathos Town, one which I frequented regularly was on the waters edge going towards the airport. There are ruins of an old windmill you cant miss it.
It has a great position, ideal for a relaxing drink looking out to sea, on certain days you can watch the tourists flights coming in to land.

The Windmill: On Top of Skiathos

by Cham Written Jul 21, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The restaurant is stituated at the highest point of new skiathos town... you can see it from the port as it looks like a windmill. The way up there is a bit trechorous with lots of steep steps but it's worth it.

The service was first class the view from there is amazing. To any guys out there that want to be romantic, i would say this is the perfect spot!

I can't fault the food and as with the rest of skiathos the local wine is very very good.

The restaurant is more expensive than other places on the island and because of it's location it is probably not ideal for families with small children or for the elderly and disabled, which is a shame because it's a place that i would recommend to anyone.

Favorite Dish: I'm a big fan of calamari and this place doesn't let me down. The seafood like everywhere on the island is completely fresh, in fact if you go down to the port early in the morning you'll see the restaurant owners running down there to get the best fish.

apart from the fish i recommend the wine there, have it with a bottle of water like the greek gods used to and overlooking the island you may even feel like you are.

  • KALYBI the L is actually a greek inverted V.: Best Authentic Greek Taverna in TROULOS

by poshtroika Updated Jun 8, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This has to be the little gem in Troulos, forget the rest go for the best.
plus points Small Menu, you know it will be fresh. Family run. Son does the serving, others the cooking.
Lovely little garden taverna about 15 tables.
We were a party of 14 adults plus 2 children.
All the starters were very good, Fried Courgettes, Fried Aubergines, Sakinaki, Gigantes, all seemed to be priced at 2 Euros.
The specials on the two nights we ate there were great, first Stuffed Squib, a large meaty dish not the little rings. The next time Stafardo excellent.
The house wine was very good.
Total Bill for 14 adults 2 children for Wine, Retsina, beers Starters mains and treats for children (the adults were full when it came to desert) Total 171 Euros. (split between the adults about 13 euros a head less than 10 pounds) what a great place.

Favorite Dish: All on the plates were cleared and between us probably had every item on the menu.
Pork Chop (must have extra large pigs), steaks even better and cooked as requested. Mixed grill enormous, Masaka to die for. All dishes are great.
