Something worth mentioning is the airport at Skiathos. It has a famously short runway. As you descend, only the sea is visible with the runway ending just before the beach! This makes for an exiting touch down. Consequently there is a stop at Thessaloniki or Volos to top up with fuel as the plane is not able to take off with enough fuel to return to the UK.

The run way on Skiathos is supposed to be the shortest in Europe and I would agree. You must watch the Aeroplanes take off and land.

We flew with easyjet to Athens and stayed overnight in Athens before taking the coach and flying dolphin to Skiathos. It is not easy to get information about the coach and dolphins as the schedules are only published one week beforehand and contacting the travel agencies over the telephone can be time consuming and awkward (especially if you, like I, speak no Greek). There is conflicting information available online regarding the locations of the pick uppoints in Athens - we used Alkyon travel on Akademias (street?) close to Omonia Square. Make sure you do your research thoroughly before leaving and try to book in adavnce - there should be no problem getting a coach and ferry ticket - but they are occassionally booked to capacity (and beyond!).

Car hire is essential in Skiathos although the bus service and Taxi services are very goodand cheap. If you want to explore the Island you require a vehicle. There is only one main road on Skiathos and this is easy to drive on, but if you want to see more I would recommend a 4WD vehicle as the roads are not roads at all, just dirt tracks and can be scary in certian places.

There is one major road that runs along the island of skiathos and it's frequented by airconditioned coaches. The Bus stops are numbered so it makes life easier... the lower the number the closer you are to the town, the higher the number the closer you are to the Koukounaries.
The buses at low season are about once every 20-30 minutes but during high season they can be as regular as every 7 minutes...
No need to buy a ticket beforehand the conductor will come down the bus and ask you which stop you want.
If you are lucky you will get a seat if not then it's amazing how many people they can get on this bus... seriously the conductor will arrange you in such a way that everyone will fit.
Taking the bus is the easiest and cheapest way of getting around the island.

The island of Skiathos lies 41 nautical miles from Volos and 44 from Agios Konstantinos.
You can get there by plane from Athens, by ferry, boat or the fast hydrofoils from Agios Konstantinos, Volos, Alonissos and Skopelos.
Or you can go on a fun day-cruise with Kostas Dimitriou, who'll teach you some Greek traditional dances.

Walking in Skiathos can be really pleasant and enjoyable. Hang around in its narrow alleys, visit the lovely small peninsula Bourtzi, 1 of the beautiful churches here, or enjoy your lunch and dinner in 1 of the fine tavernas...
Take a look at its white painted 2- and 3-storey houses with roof tiles and little flower gardens, visit lovely shops...

You can fly direct to Skiathos from numerous international airports however flights are limited so early booking is advised, so check with your travel agent.
If you are unable to get a direct flight to Skaithos it should be noted that Skiathos is also connected to most international airports via Athens airport where you can take a 40 minute connecting flight to the island. The approach to the airport is stunning, banking steeply in to the right before offering superb views of the harbour before a landing which yes, the runway appears short and the plane brakes hard, but which is nowhere near as dramatic as what it was hyped up to be I thought. You can alternatively travel by sea to Skiathos from Athens
Only 16km long, Skiathos is served by a single main road that has frequent buses so getting around is easy. There are several sandy beaches and Skiathos town offers many fantastic restaurants and a lively atmosphere as contrasted to other quieter areas on the island. Popular regions to stay in Skiathos include Skiathos Town, with its chic atmosphere, Achladies, which is an altogether more relaxed area, Platanias, which offers spectacular beaches, Katsaro, which maintains much of its original charm, and Koukounaries, which is also very relaxed. All in all, Skiathos can offer something to suit all tastes and ages

Getting around Skiathos is easy as it is a relatively small Island, no larger than 61 square miles. The total length of the coastline is 44 kilometres and the central road is approx 12 kilometres and joins Skiathos Town with Koukanaries. During the summer months the bus runs every 20 mins and services many of the sandy beaches on the the way. The buses do tend to get very crowded during July and August but there are plenty of taxis available.
