Sailing Cruises in Historic Yacht
We went on a 10 day sailing cruise to the Sporades. The company does shorter packages - a week to Evia and even day trips in summer (I think). The boat was totally beautiful - all wooden and inside it was like something from a film set. She is a historic boat and the owners Marios (who's Greek) and Charlotte (who's English) have restored her. We stayed in rooms at night - Trkieri Monastery, which is a must (albeit a little spartan compared to most hotels) and some lovely rooms in Patateri which is the main town on Alonissos. The seas round Alinissos are warmer (and cleaner) than my bath and this extraordinary turquoise blue - you look out of the boat and you can see down for ever. We even had doplhins playing in the bow wave - apparently they recognise local boats that are fun to play with! One day some of the other passengers put a fishing line over the stern and caught a tuna - and we all had tuna steak for lunch!

Monastaries in Meteora
These are amazing, working monastaries perched on the top of rugged crags and columns of rock.
The road from Volos to the Meteora is a long coach ride ---but it is worth the effort!
Fitness level needed is moderate because there are places to get your breath. However, if you need a buggy or walking aids then this may not be the best place for you.
The monks used to be winched up, in a netted basket, to the monastatries. These days life is far easier for them!
Enjoy lots of photos of life in the past at the nearby Hotel Meteora.
The views are breath-taking and a lot of the information given to us by our guide was fascinating. A good camera is a must!
Look out for the black and white photos of Costas Balafas ---name from my friend, Mandi Millen. Thanks!
Would I go again? YES!
The ancient Greek Mythology talks about a ship mission from Iolkos (ancient Volos) to Kolhida (Krimaia of the Black Sea), organised by the hero Jason, who took with him the best and strongest men of Greece. The name of the ship was "Argo", and the legent is still alive in the people's memory. You will find the figure of "Argo" everywhere: sketches, drawings, models... But you will find also a real ship, sailing in the sea, constructed according to the ancient traditional materials and methods.
