New shop in the old town with lovely handmade ceramic and silver jewellery by the owners,
neatly arranged. Not a usal souvenir shop stuffed full with trash.
Pleasant atmosphere also given by the friendly owners Emmanuela and Gerasimos Mikelatos.

What to buy: handmade dishes in several colours, lantern and hand made silver jewellerys

    What to pay: reasonably priced

You can find here little shops from gifts to very expensive label products.
Shops are open from morning to late night. Some of them are having siesta.
I love especially stores where they are selling olive products.

  • Rethymno: A Paradise to Discover

The fertile soil of Crete is very nutritious for the sheep and goats of Rethymno and thus accounts, inter alia, for their excellent meat. Various wonderful products are made from their milk. Cretan gruyere (“graviera”) is known worldwide. Moreover, the “feta” and “myzithra” cheese varieties of Rethymno taste wonderful and enjoy high quality status.

At Rethymno, you can find “staka” – fresh cream skimmed off the top of milk and cooked with a little flour and salt – “stakovoutyro” – butter cream made by cooking staka – and of course the wonderful dishes that contain these ingredients, such as “stakopilafo” – the rice pilaf flavoured with “staka”.

The region of Mt Kedros in the district of Amari is famous for its gruyere (“graviera”) cheese, while the village of Gerakari boasts wonderful fruit production (cherries, apples, etc.). The mountain zone of Abadia produces excellent big olives. Amari is known for its black wine. Its abundant springs and cool climate account for the delicious products of this region.

Rethymno farmers market: local fruits ans herbs

    Rethymno market

One morning in Rethymno I woke up very early and since my hubby-Santo likes to sleep late I sneak out from my room and started walking around the Old Town of Rethymno.
To my surprise in spite of an early hour the town was throbing of life.
All the tourists were off course asleep after long nights of drinking and eating, but the streets were full of life - a local, Cretan life.
First I came across an open shutters ( no sign or logo on the building) where the baker was baking fresh bread and selling it to the local people on little scuters.
Then I came across another open shutters where butcher was cutting a lambs hanging down the ceiling.
After that I noticed local ladys (wearing all black clothes) carrying a plastic bags with no logo on them. I started walking in the direction where they were coming from and after few minutes I found myself on vibrant farmers market.

What to buy: You can buy fresh froots to take with you to the beach. You can also buy herbs from old local people who are trying to make some extra money. You can also get there honey and cheese and I am sure if you get there early enough you will find much more food (like fish) that can't stay in the sun too long.
You can also get ther lots of junk imported from china....sadly...

What to pay: Everything is really cheap and they are happy to give an extra orange to the tourists. You can also try the fruit before you buy it.
