Ikaria Island Things to Do

  • Nas

We drove to Nas, but to be honest, it was very hot there and we didn't walk down the many steps that lead down to the beach.

  • Visit the red mineral spring near Agios...

We followed a tip of our landlady and drove to Agios Kirikos and then approx. 2 miles west where we found the warm red mineral spring (Lefkada/Therma Lefkados). There was only a small sign to show where it is on the left hand side opposite some houses and we had do walk down a slope downhill to get there. Bring good shoes with you, flip-flops won't...

  • Seychelles Beach

The drive from Gialiskari to Seychelles beach through the approx. 1000m high mountains was not for the faint hearted. The road has in parts no barriers and the sheer grandness of the mountains and cliffs are breathtaking. Wide gorges and rock formations everywhere and new roads are being built. It took us approx. 1 1/2 hours to get there....

Ikaria Island Restaurants

  • Wonderful Taverna in Armenistis

Our favourite restaurant in Ikaria was the Paschalia in Armenistis with wonderful authentic greek food and exceptional red wine home made by the owner.Father and son are a wonderful team and offer extremely quick service with a smile! An exceptional place and we wish them all the very best, mind you they have been going for many years and we read...

  • Great food!!

This was the best place I had dinner on the island. It is located on the roof of "Kerame Hotel". The view is beautiful, the food very good and the service friendly.I suggest that you choose a table under the hotel's windmill. Everything was tasteful. I had grilled chicken with a salad of local boiled greens and herbs.

Ikaria Island Nightlife

  • andreslo2000's Profile Photo

    by andreslo2000 Updated Nov 6, 2006

It's a quiet island and not much is going on. Sorry I'm mistaken. There are two things the native islanders can not avoid. It's a long talks lasting almost the whole night (with a good food and drink of course) and backgammon playing. The way they are taking this game is really fanatic. Just think of this. It's a final game world cup in football Italy vs France. Do you think anyone interested in football. No! But there was a crowd geathering around two backgammon players and when one of them win there was a lot bigger aplause than that one after Matterazzi's equaliser on 1-1.

Dress Code: Just be sure to have an extra sweatter. The night can be really cold because of the wind.

resting before sleep Everybody plays backgammon

Ikaria Island Transportation

  • You will need a hire car

We booked a hire car with Dohili tours = Lemy car hire by email and delivery and pick-up worked a treat. They have offices all over the island. If you arrive in Ikaria by ferry and arrive in Evdilos, you might be able to get a taxi to travel to Gialiskari, which is approx. 20 minutes away. The drive from the Airport to Gialiskari took approx. 1 hour...

  • Agios Kyrikos to Evdilos

When in Agios Kyrkos the best way to get to the north coast is to share a taxi with some other traveler, its cheaper (around 10 euros each) and faster, cause there are no real bus schedules and it takes for ages (around 1 hour) even in a taxi to drive to the other side of the really hilly island. The taxi stop is near the restaurants on the left...

Ikaria Island Shopping

  • local wine, oil and honey in Samos

There are many shops and supermarkets that sell local honey and wines. I've been living in Pythagorio for a few years now and i don't think you would be able to order via the phone or mail, Greeks aren't really bothered to do things this way on the island. My father in law makes his own sweet red wine and sells it for about 12euros for a one litre...

  • Excellent wine and honey

Local wine and honey can be bought at any food shop on the island.Having grown up in the Black Forest area of Germany, I just had to try the Ikarian honey which looks so similar to the Black Forest honey. Ikarian honey is medium to dark brown from the pine trees and herbs of the island. Flavour is a rich piney, licorice one that sets it apart...

Ikaria Island Tourist Traps

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are really not a complete Robinson Crusoe avoid that Faros beach because it's a HUGE possibility that in June or July (I'm not for sure wheather in August is much different) you want be seeing a single soul the whole day.

Unique Suggestions: Return and leave with the same bus you arrived with. After all the sights you would see is worth of that 1,5€ payed for the ride. Just dont wait till the evening for the next bus :-(

Fun Alternatives: There is another beach in southern side of the island. It's called Therma. I must admit that the action in Therma is not much more lively (for ALL the Therma visitors are senior citizens on their rehabilitation programs - Therma is a resourt with hot springs) but you are at least going to hear some human voices (mind the Greek call ELLA, ELLA, ELLA comming from every corner :-)

Crowded Faros beach Therma and hot springs

Miscellaneous: Yes. Take a vallet. A full vallet. A vallet full of money. YOu can always BUY whatever you need.
AND... it's more comfortable, it's a lot of fun buying, it's even cheaper, it's... all the reasons are in favour, but people still carry those big bags and suit cases with them. Just try once my way. Maybe you'll like it.
