Alistrati Cave

by greekcypriot

Alistrati cave lies about 6 km southeast of the village of Alistrati at a place called "Petroto" in Serres . The expanse of the area is almost 14.000 square meters. At a distance of 250 km from the southern part of the entrance of the Alistrati cave it passes the railway line from Serres to Drama. As a result of the water flow of the river the limestone layers of the mountain has been corroded and the ravine of Aggitis river has been shapedTemperatures in the Alistrati Cave Because of the thin limestone layers above (10-30m) the temperature of the Alistrati cave is quite high (15-17oC). Temperature is stable even in the winter because the airing of the Alistrati cave is less than the proper. In May humidity is high (95-105%) and it's quite stable all year long. According to a study of the atmospheric conditions of the cave all chambers are sufficiently air-filled. The temperature inside...

Monastery of Timios Prodromos

by greekcypriot

The Monastery of Timios Prodromos is located 12 km. NE of Serres, in the bottom of a ravine on Mt Menoikion. The catholicon (main church) was built in the 14th century and belongs to the single-aisled domed type with lite, narthex, exonarthex and an oblong roofed portico on the south side (Makrynariki). On the north side are two chapels and the belfry. The rest of the buildings are organized around the catholicon: cells, abbot's quarters, school, refectory, library, hostel. The wall paintings of the catholicon were executed in 1300-1333 and were continued in several periods, by various artists. The monastery was founded in 1275-1278 by monk Ioannikios from Serres and a few years later it was renovated by his nephew, Ioakeim, bishop of Zichne. It soon developed to an important monastic centre with great financial prosperity, because it was favoured by the Byzantine emperors. Patriarch...

Kerkini lake: flamencos and buffalos

by Panos1111

Kerkini lake is a lake in the Serres prefecture, north Greece. It was created following the construction of a dam in 1932, although the area did have a small lake and swamps before that. It is great for bird-watching (flocks of pink flamencos was the most exciting thing for me although I am not into bird-watching!). One can also see many buffalos, I think most are not wild any more but it is still a good sight. The lake is good for 4WD drives and mountain bikes. We did hire two mountain bikes and cycled for 1.5 hours on the dyke near the town of Kerkini, it was good but not spectacular. We also drove at the other side of the lake, in "paralimnio dasos" (the noth east side of the lake) where it is great for bird watching (don't forget your binoculars!). You can get boats going out to the lake, canoes and some pretty tame horse riding neat the town of Kerkini (good for kids but that's...
