On the imposing, pine-filled hill overlooking today's city of Serres, another monument rises, the powerful Acropolis, where the spirit of Byzantine remains vigilant. There one can still listen to the mournful voices emitting from the remains of the old castle. This Byzantine Acropolis was built on an ancient fort used to defend the city in the 7th and the 6th centuries BC. During the Byzantine period it had been quoted in many golden bulls of different Byzantine emperors as "Castle". However, as time went by, the word "Castle" ended up including the whole city. That is the reason why, at the beginning of our century the people of Serres were called "Kastrini" by the inhabitants of the villages around Serres. From the Frankish conquest in 1204 and onwards the name "Kasteli" prevailed for the Acropolis and remained until the years of the Turkish domination. The Turks called it "Bas Koule"...

Later it became independent from Athens.Philipp II, Alexander the Great's father, extended Macedonia to the river Nestos. Amfipoli was in the region that became Macedonian.In 168 BC the Romans won the battle of Pydna against the Macedonians. They divided Macedonia into four parts. Amfipoli became the capital of the first part. It was an important town on the Via Egnatia that led from Dyrrachio to Konstantinoupoli. St. Paul passed Amfipoli when he was travelling to Greece. Visit the Serres Museum. What tremendous relics from 500 BC to show the Roman influence on the area. Pity we could not take pictures inside. The domed ceilings were amazing.
