Upper (old) city (Ano Poli), Thessaloniki
Take a long walk at the Old Town
Fondest memory: It's one the pretiest areas of Thessaloniki. With old houses, small alleys and a beautiful view its worth it. Especially when you realise that you are totally lost but you still keep going. A map would be helpful at the point that you decide you would rather head back.
There are a lot of small squares where children play, people are just relaxing having a coffe. At some parts of the Old Town there are tavernas with delicious food and traditional cafes, called 'kafenia'.
At the top of the Old Town there is the old walls of Thessaloniki called the Seven Canstles. The view from there is magnificent. Just next to the wall going towards the city center there are the Gardens of Pasa, a small park where you can have a picnic.
Fondest memory: This is the view from the window of my apartment. The apartment was small, but the priceless view from the balcony- yes, that's Mt Olympus with the snow-capped peaks- made it feel huge. We spent countless hours sitting out on the balcony looking down upon the forrest of tv antennae, cinderblock apartments, lively rooftops, to the harbor below.
Favorite thing: Visit Ana Poli. This is the beautiful neighbourhood set on the huge hill near The Kastelli. Wander up the narrow cobble stoned streets and enjoy the homes and gardens and architecture along the way. Have a cold beer at the top at one of the bars and enjoy the unique surroundings. Then eat at one of the small tavernas in the area. Some of the tavernas are set in gardens!
