    Football in Thessaloniki

by mindcrime Updated May 21, 2015

As everywhere in Greece the people of Thessaloniki love their football teams, there major ones are PAOK FC(1926), ARIS FC(1914) and Iraklis FC (1908). When fans from Athens come into town there’s tension but they also like to raise riots on each other (especially between Paok and Aris fans, in such case you better stay away to be on the safe side).

Most of those teams run sport clubs in basketball, volleyball, handball etc and the truth is that they have won much more champions on these sports than in football where Pireaus(Olympiakos) has 42, Athens(Panathinaikos & Aek) 31 and Thessaloniki only 5 (Aris 3, Paok 2). But Aris was the first one back in 1928.

Anyway, our friends on our way to Ano Poli drove by the stadiums of those teams (we didn’t go inside) and later we also took some photos from above.
Pic1:Toumba Stadium is the home of PAOK FC, built in 1959, 32,000 capacity
Pic2:Kaftanzogleio Stadium is the home of Iraklis FC, built in 1960, 28,000 capacity
Pic3:Harilaou Stadium is the home of Aris FC, built in 1951, 23,000 capacity. The official name is Kleanthis Vikelidis after the veteran player known as Macedonian Tank in the 1930s)
Pic4:Iraklis Fan Club in the city center
Pic5:graffiti for the 100 years of Aris FC (1914-2014) at Nea Paralia, by the way if you see some IRA graffiti here and there don’t get confused they are after IRAklis team and not after the Ireland conflicts :)
